Garmin recommend you don’t move till the gps has acquired the satellites . it will pick up faster than if you moving . they say it struggles to lock onto the satellite during its search if you moving and thus will take longer.

Never timed it but my 705 picks up signal quite quick.

how do I find out what firmware, software. shareware, makeitworkware my 705 is using ?

how important is it to make sure you update the software ? Mines working perfect so I really dont want to have to upgrade if I dont have to.

I can confirm that. Yesterday I started cycling without my unit having found signal. It took quite a while for it to connect. It shows as it is looking for signal and the unit had to restart a couple of times. I just didn't feel like waiting.

No issues with trees and bridges. Just avoid them .

Gè?

The E500 is more like a standard cycling computer without wires, while the 800 is more like a conventional gps for navigation which provides all the cycling computer stuff plus the ability to navigate. Navigation facility can come in handy when you are riding new routes when the path splits in multiple directions and you need to decide which way to go...

Only on the road though...people often think if they buy the 800 that it will arrive at a for example Van gaalens and it will show them oom piets or daggpad in turn by turn navigation...it won't. Also touchscreen in mud = scratch device.

Anyhow, the 800 isn't worse than the 500 but it doesn't have anything more than the 500 on the trails.

Can't you get a SA single or hiking trail map that you can download onto your Garmin?, which should show most of the smaller jeep track and trails?

you could but they still won't contain the trails for the places we gautengers ride

Van gaalens

Rietvlei

Thaba

King's Kloof

Northerns

Groenies

If they do, hells bells, I am upgrading to an edge 800 right now.

The free maps from www.openmtbmaps.org seem to have maps of our local trails.

My 2009 Topo & Rec maps from Garmap also have trails and walking paths mapped:

You can also create custom maps for the Edge 800 from scanned images.

So have you gone to van gaalens and put in daggapad or greek chruch or "blue route" at thaba and it came up with a navigation arrow on the screen?

I spend 95% of my time on the road, so no. Just throwing out alternatives. Someone who MTBs more than I do may have tried out the maps.
