I have noticed that the downshift on the RH Ultegra STI is getting progressively worse, especially onto the smaller sprockets. Bike has done about 2600 km plus some trainer time.

I have replaced all the cables and housings but it feels as though the shifter itself is the problem, almost as though the return spring on the black lever has gone completely soft. I do all my own service etc so this really irrititates me.

Anybody out there experienced this problem?

Thanks.

Have not come across this in such a short space of time before, get hold of the Shimano guys about warranties? If not, you must find someone who can service those things, although if you do that your warranty is void.

The internal parts are not very durable. When they fail the shifting just does not work and some parts inside are made out of plastic so they are not very strong. Hopefully shimano will fix this up like Titus suggests

We have experienced a similar problem with the left-hand Tiagral ever on our tandem. Advice from Shimano: Replace the lever, but you can't just buy one!!

Anyone got a spare left-hand lever they want to donate?!smileys/smiley2.gif

Yes you can buy just a lever Trackie.  I bought an Ultegra lever (9 speed though) about 18 months ago.  The thing is called a "bareback lever" as it doesn't have the rubber part on.  Cost -> R750 compared to R1400 for a full new lever.  This is the Shimano groupsets biggest problem.  With Campag you strip the Ergopower and fix it.

Thanks guys.

Have ordered a new lever from CWC but am not giving up on the old one. Will strip it down at my leisure and figure out which part causes the problem. Must be some sort of a friction drive on the downshift. Will let you know once I have fixed it. Shimano do not keep spares like that.

Regards.

Contrary to what most Campagnola pundits preach the Shimano levers are serviceable and can be dismantled. Spares may be difficult to obtain as Shimano sees this as a hold on their monopoly. Dismantling and servicing is clearly described in Chapter 30 of the Barnetts Cycling Manual. I downloaded the entire manual from the Internet (when it was still freeware..... thers is copyright now)

NickD send me a PM (private mail) with your contact email adress and I will email you in Pdf format the whole of Chapter 30, Shift Control Mechanisms.

O ja in the manual they do not discriminate, they describe the service of Campy shifters as well.

Any other problems on bikes please contact me and I will email the appurtenant volumes. Please be reminded that it is the 2003 manual and that the newer 10 speeds, disk brakes and shocks are not discussed. It is still an amazing scource of information.
