Didn't do any proper calculations or really scientific, just a gut feel - I'd pay max.... R30 000

If new a carbon HT with that kit will cost more than 30K

New that will set you back65Gees

There have been a number of Tall Boys on the hub second hand and with much lower spec for 30-35K

I would say possibly R40+ is gonna be closer to the mark

Secondhand...go half the price of new(if in great condition) and drop from there. Bikes don't hold their value and is worth what someone is willing to pay...not what he thinks.

Ok back to the question, I think @TheV is right...60k / 2 = 30k, but then she must be in great condition. I wouldn't pay more than that anyway for a secondhand carbon bike.

Ok, great feed back thank you, now what kind of life span would I get out of a carbon bike?

I look after my gear very well, will have it serviced when needed and clean it after rough use.

If I buy this bike and spend that kind of money it needs to last!

Look you can't go wrong with Santa Cruz and the tallboy at it(It's not What Mountain bike, bike of the year 2011 for nothing)

Get insured and then it doesn't matter what happens to the bike or the fact that you dont have a frame warranty.

The big question is, what is the bike being offered to you for, and have you made an offer yet?

@ Rouxtjie, thats just convinced me that a carbon hardtail frame is whats needed(ie Insurance, you 100% they will cover a secondhand carbon bike, or is that dependent on your own insurance)

Why does he need a hardtail? huh?

Cyclesure will insure him, provided an affiliated LBS inspects the frame, that was the procedure with me anyway. Mackie(my brother-in-law) didn't even have that with his secondhand carbon GT marathon, he was insured with Outsurance

Why does he need a hardtail? huh? Sorry I was talking about a hardtail carbon frame for myself with regard to the insurance info, was always worried it could not be covered

I would say R38k would be a decent offer, don't be stupid and make the guy a rediculous offer pay what the bike is worth. If it is really just 4 months old then it is worth the money. It also depends on how desperate the guy is. Frame will last you easily three to five years but the components will be a different story. Have you got the budget to maintain a XX or XTR bike?

nothing on you Sharkie, so please dont take offense.

But this has to be the FIRST time someone on the hub is advocating paying a HIGHER price for a bike, and putting in a "decent" offer.

Hub folk seem to have a habit of always finding ways to push the price down, not push the price up !

Non taken I just believe in paying what something is really worth. I am no bargain hunter but this bike is only 4 months old and probably has under 1000km on it. This bike is worth just over R60k so to go and offer the guy half would not be right. R30k will be what a bike shop will give him they will add a margin of 30% to that so they will probably put it on the floor for R40-42k and sell it in the end for R39k
