So got a nice red letter in the post today.

Seems my fee increase for 2012 is just over 20%?

Thought inflation was still single digits, guess not with all the articles on food...

Depends which inflation you look at. Most people believe there employers who offer them the single digit increase. But few know that true inflation is dependent on the city/town you live in and the factors directly linked to the necessities. That figure is around 15-17%.

I really have no idea what you are referring to but the publicised inflation numbers provide plenty detail on how the numbers are made up. These are split into different products and even different regions. There are also numbers publicised for rural areas.

I am fully aware of a group of people who will dispute publicised stats.

It only becomes an expensive item if you use it once a week - if you go to gym 20 times a month it works out to be about R30 per session. Not sure you can do much else for 2hrs for R30 ...

Their increased operating costs are not necessarily linked to inflation so it is wrong to think companies will only increase their prices by inflation. Inflation is more representitive of the average of all total cost increases year on year rather than a bench mark from which to increase your prices.

I must say although it is expensive they do get new machines every few years, facilties are mostly really good, they provide a good service imo

Worth every cent.

I've been to other non virgin gyms and eish not for me :S

Plus I make sure to get my money worth. ;P

If you consider you get any number of 'classes' for free. Advice from the floor staff, various tests, access to a heated pool (suana and sunbeds if thats your things), secure area for kiddies, normally secure off street parking ect i agree it is worth every cent and like you say some of the other non virgin gyms leave much to be desired!

my wife and I joined planet fitness in February on one of their specials. Costs us R80 each a month for the next 3 years. Ok we had to pay for the 3 years in advance but we make sure we get R80 worth of exercise a month. Only have to go 8 times and it's R10 a session. All I need is the pools and some basic equipment. Will use the squash courts once my wife's ankle is better

After 3 months of training I finally did a 1km straight freestyle swim in the pool on Friday. Isn't a mssaive distance but I was happy to get there. Felt great and could have done more.

I recall a similar special with Health and Raquet for life memberships, 3,5 and 10yr ect. Pay up front for a minimal fees. A few months later they closed down and were bought out by Virgin and all those memberships were null and void? Also not sure about the rest of the country but i couldnt even tell you were a Planet Fitness is in the WC where as i have the choice of 3 virgin clubs within a 5 km radius of my house and office?

I was dating a guy in JHB who was a member at Planet Fitness. I went with him a few time (to watch, not train) and I must admit, that gym looked promising.

But alas we don't have Planet Fitness in KZN.

Virgin Active really is the best Gym in SA but boy - Over priced !

To keep up the quality and levels of servrice/equipment costs money - I dont mind buying no name products or choosing cheaper option for certain items but i think i would rather pay a bit extra to go to a place i want to be at and not something that the very thought of it turns me off ... who would get up at 5am do to a spin class where the machines are broken, instructor is 30mins later, sound system doesnt work ect ect.
