I disgaree - they have no compeditors that offer what they do ito nationwide coverage. Sure GP might have a few Plant Fitness' but thats about it really. No other gym have heated pools, various studios, spinning, yoga, beach volley ball, squas, tennis, ect ect. No people dont just buy it they protest and make a scene (and then buy it) much the same as in this example. Whilst im never happy paying more i dont think it is out landish as the increase once you have taken into consideration inflation/exchange rate might only actually be an actualy increase of 10%.

I agree with MorewoodMad on his points about the expense drivers as they are clearly expanding.

Yup theres no reason for a 20% increase but its targeted as a luxury at a market they suspect can afford the increase, Im not arsed since vitality pays my membership fees. Its basically the same as DSTV just try and get passed a call center agent or a reply on a mail, they know they have the market and no matter how hard you complain they could'nt care less. Since if you want what they got you will fork out and pay for it and you will have to deal with the often rude, mostly non-existent service they offer. Its a luxury item once again.

In the UK you get a choice of multiple gyms and as an example satelite providers, where for R300 bucks you get uncapped 20mbit internet and 500+ channels to watch. it shows you how we are being ripped. What we need is a proper methodology to regulate "market leaders" aka monopolies.

Depends which inflation you look at. Most people believe there employers who offer them the single digit increase. But few know that true inflation is dependent on the city/town you live in and the factors directly linked to the necessities. That figure is around 15-17%.

Yikes!

They are not a monopoly - they are just head and shoulders above everyone else that it almost seems that way. There is a reason for a 20% increase .. more money - i thought that was obvious.

They are a monopoly dude they have bought out every small time operator with the same idea. The only one that resisted is planet fitness and they cater for a different market. So VA is not too bothered about them for the time being.

Characteristics of a Monopoly

  • Profit Maximiser: Maximizes profits.
  • Price Maker: Decides the price of the good or product to be sold.
  • High Barriers to Entry: Other sellers are unable to enter the market of the monopoly.
  • Single seller: In a monopoly there is one seller of the good which produces all the output.[5] Therefore, the whole market is being served by a single company, and for practical purposes, the company is the same as the industry.
  • Price Discrimination: A monopolist can change the price and quality of the product. He sells more quantities charging less price for the product in a very elastic market and sells less quantities charging high price in a less elastic market.

I dont think they are a true monopoly. Yes they haver economies of scale and certain other advantages. A monopoly is like Telkom and Eskom.

Nothing stops another person/entity from opening gym even more luxurious than VA.....

Momentum is useless, even going the compulsary 10 visits a month you save something like R100 bucks of the total monthly fee, once you add the deficit amount and the momentum monthly fee.

You are doing it wrong. With Momentum Health and Multiply, in addition to the money saved on your gym fee, you earn

R5 400 a year... dont see Discovery getting anywhere close to that?

Cant remember the extact figures but its R400 and something for my monthly membership

Momentum multiply fee 120 something

If i gym the maximum (more than 10 times) a month they cover about R200 out of that R400.

So you still end up paying R300 a month for your gym.

Discovery Gym 4 times a month, = 100% saving.

What about the HealthReturns you earn?

If you have Multiply membership and belong to an appropriate gym through Multiply, your HealthReturns will be calculated on
the highest of the
available results:

lol okay so I cant make the table work but its as much as R450 a month...

Just type in www.momentum.co.za/health and click on anything that says healthreturns...

Getting 10 times as much since ive joined vitality in comparison to Multiply. But the first initial bottom line is a direct saving of R300 + of my gym membership. by default. 36 gym sessions a year is nothing, especially compared to being forced to go 10 times plus.

1 I travel a lot

2. I gym only for core training and spinning in winter.

So most months i ended up paying full gym membership anyway. Momentum set theirs up for gym bunnies, not for outdoor athletes. Dont get me wrong i have gripes with Vitality as well, but its a far superiour product than Multiply.

VItality only compares favourably if you disregard the R5 400 in HealthReturns per person a year out that you can earn from Momentum. Are you perhaps a discovery broker? :)

I am not but can also say That I save much more than that.

My Family of three has gym fees of R140 a month , I received R8000-R9000 back on healthy food purchace from Pick& paye last year, do not count the money back at exclusive books, cape union mart @home Reggies Clicks etc.

So if Momentum beats that they must be great.

They do, simple maths: family of three, thus R5 400 times three beats R9 000, and that's before looking at partner discounts from Garmin, Kalahari.net, Canon, NuMetro etc (since you decided to go there). But we digress, this thread is actually about Virgin's fees...
