I really think these communities should re-imburse all the public's taxes that have been spent on what should be public infrastructure: streets, pavements, lighting, stormwater drains, electricity poles ... etc.

I lived in Edenglen. Then someone decided it would be a good idea to make it a boomed area and I was 5 houses away from the only 24hr access gate. The noise on Friday & Sat nights was terrible and my lone voice meant nothing. I was also on the boundry with veld behind me. They did nothing to secure my property so in effect I was the fence. They also lied about insurance discounts as mine went up because I was on the boundry and I had to put up an electric fence. Anyway I refused to contribute and moved. I do not agree with road closures!!! Only those who have no social skills hide.

these fenced in villages and the pubic issues was contested in court and the "village" residents lost the case and hade to take down the fences and booms accross the road. THE ruling is they violated public access to public road and freedom of movement. THis was however about ten years ago before the ANC bigwigs were afraid of their supporters. Now however most of them live in this so called fenced villages.

The residents probably took advantage of the lull over the xmas period to erect the barricades - was there any notice posted of the intent to do so? There should have been due process. and notices posted of the intent to do so, and inviting objections are part of that process.

But you must appeal - write a letter objecting to the Urban Planning & Development of the region, they are the ones who deal with the process. And your councillor, and the councillor of that ward. Also write letters of protest to the local press.

You really should not accept this violation of your rights. Whilst I understand the security issues, this is a denial of public rights issue. Lawyers can help with court orders, and civil suites but lawyers cost big bucks. But you can at least write a few letter, and know that you have at least tried.

Damn I thought this thread was about the people in Northcliff boycotting pet food and that some sales people had been put out of work....

I made the move to a walled estate a few years ago, with huge sacrifice, after a few near misses. I hope those residents enjoy the reduction of pedestrian and motorised loiterers cruising the suburbs checking out their next potential targets. The government can't make people feel secure, so I am sure after mutliple incidents, the residents made their own plan. Well done to them. Somehow the safety issue seems so much more important than a hill to cycle up and down... But that's just my (I sleep a lot better at night)'s 2cw.

they would not have done it if there was not a crime issue, i recall looking at buying property there and backed off when i heard about the crime stats. usuall they close off most roads but leave one or two entry/exit points so i dont think its a matter of no entry at all. just change your route accordingly, there are enough hills to keep you busy

Yes there was. Had a mid-November date to register objections. The reference number for the application was 351.

The sign itself was rather small and looked a bit worse for the wear. I suppose at least it wasn't stuck in adisused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'.
