Avid Elixir 3 or Juicy 5

Hi All

 

I am currently putting together an all moutain hardtail and I have a decision to make.

 

I have a set of Avid Elixir 3's and a set of Avid Juicy 5's that I can put on.

 

Anybody have any comments on either of the brake sets and how they compare to each other?

 

Before anyone suggests that I get something else, this is what I have to use (for now anyway)

I've had excellent service from my J5s, and i've been very surprised by the performance of the Elixir 5s that came stock on my XC bike.

we all know the sob stories associated with Avid blah blah fishpaste, but I'd say go with the Elixirs. Better modulation than J5s due to the tapebore stuff. They also seem more resilient to heat fade because the J5s used to go a bit limp under continuous heaving braking. whereas the Elixir 5s did superbly down that insanely steep and long Meerendal descent.

 

My vote is the Elixir 3s, but given your choices, i'd say they about equal.

Dont know the other but i have elexir 3 brakes on my spark50 and its cr@p!

qualify cr@p ito the brakes performance vs your expectations vs your braking habits. its more realistic that way.

I have had Juicy 5's and Elixir 5's on two bikes. I can't say that I was overly impressed with any one set. But the Elixirs looks nicer.

I've got elixir 5s on my DH bike. They stop me perfectly. In fact, I have had occasions when my front loses traction during braking. And I have minion dhf super tackys on there. So no, they're not crap. They're only "crap" if they're incorrectly setup or have air in the system. Or. You just plain don't know how to brake properly.

I have elixir 3 and they work amazingly - if anything is going to go its tyre traction before these boyz fade - that said I'm not someone who uses the breaks too often on a downhill

i don't have experience with the elixers , but my j5 have served me well over time
