From the durbanville area roadies thread by UDXCOB:

Just spoke to Chris' wife, he had a 7 hour opp on sunday for a ruptured liver, 30 odd pints of blood were used, today his kidneys are not good and he is going in to theatre tomorrow for the opp, and will probably be on a dialisis machine, he also has a severly broken arm.

Hi all, Im Mark one of the riders down on Smitswinkel.

I am an F rider we caught up to E group at Kommetjie. Was a nice group guys were pushing hard.

We started down Smitswinkel and were prob doing about 65 odd, it seemed there was just too little road and too much action. There was already an accident at the spot and when motorbikers came from front i got pushed off the left side into gutter.

I fell quite cleanly only skidding and coming to halt in gutter, when i looked up the motor bike had fallen and was revving flat out, biker was stuck underneath and everyone just ran away, it sounded like it was going to explode. I managed to help the motorbike dude away from bike he was quite hurt and couldnt get away from it.

Chris the guy that hit the motorbike is really badly hurt, saw his girlfriend at hospital yesterday again she said he still critical and going for more surgery, it seems his head is ok though. He has bad internal bleeding from liver damage . . They seemed to have saved his arm though!!

We are really praying and thinking of you Chris, hang in there. .

It was a terrible experience, no signal to phone for help, or to contact family. Im a bit unhappy with event organisers we must have been there for about and hour and a half and saw no event people, we had to beg lifts from other guys to get us back to start.

We pay a PPA membership fee and have all sorts of emergency contact numbers etc but there was no one to help.

Anyway thank you to the cyclists who helped, 2 ladies who where paramedics stopped to help Chris we had no idea what to do, also Gerhard who stopped to help the first cyclist down, he got hit by the motorbike while helping... Thanx to guys who gave us a lift home

will see you guys on road soon!!

Thanks for all the feedback and prayers / concern regarding Chris.

Pray that all the other people involved in the crash is well on their way to complete recovery, and that they do not keep mental scars from this incident.

Great exchanges here!

Ongoing prayers to everyone...

Agreed! One of the things I like most about cycling (I'm still very new at it) is the camaraderie between cyclists. My prayers r with everyone involved in the accident. Wish you all a speedy recovery.

A lil' bit off topic. On my way home from work (in town) yesterday, I saw a cyclist riding on the N1, not even on the left shoulder, but on the line in the middle lane! Is this not foolhardy/illegal? It was at the Marine Drive stretch btw...

I received an update yesterday on the cyclist who collided with the bike on Sunday.

He is still in critical but stable condition in ICU under heavy sedation. They operated on his arm, which has been severely damaged – the chance of an amputation is still on the cards.

He has a number of broken ribs, and as a result of this his lungs were punctured, but his liver and kidneys suffered the most damage.

Please keep him in your thoughts.

This is all incredibly hectic stuff. Hope your parents are OK and recovering well from the accident, thanks for keeping us updated on the Hub, and for your interest and concern. My thoughts to Chris and his family: get well guy, keep fighting.
