i have used Manitou R7 forks with 650b and they have Good clearance , Rocks shox dont work and will never work unless specially made 650b , Fox is the abolute best it has ample clearance and the arch design is just leaves more space. Dt swiss works but it is quite a squeese. lucky i am in the western cape whre mud is rare mostly sandy rocky tracks , so i went with the squeeze must say i had more clearance on a 26er frame with 650 wheels than that 29er..

i ad some 650 converted bikes (not mine)

So I ask you, what is the optimal amount clearance actually needed? If you gonna hit bad mud it will clog up no matter what you are riding. Just quicker with less clearance. If its gonna be a really muddy ride, you can always just switch wheelsets.

The optimal....as much as possible in the wet...every mm counts, it makes the difference between riding and stopping for a clean, yes in bad mud both sets will clog up, but I will be able to ride further and stop less to clean. Also you can't really take two wheelsets with you to Sani as an example, you get a blackbox for clothes, spares and nutrition...no space for a wheelset, also what if you hit mud on the trail, and that is the scenario I see happening most.

specialised epic alu frame 26er

Nice looking bike  Would like to see a photo from the front to check out the clearance, also for the back wheel if possible? How does it handle?
