Hi. Any advice much appreciated. Starting in Town. Picking up bike near the Green Point stadium and then planning to ride out on the cycle path

Hi there, yes, it is a very enjoyable ride, Flat but with wind always :-) you start near the civic centre... go down Hertzog Blvd, turn right at the Landrover car sales (Civic Ave) Then at the T-junction turn left, follow this road and you will find the start of the cycle path :-) The bus lane is a reddish colour, the cycle path is to the right of this... Then you can go all the way out to Blouberg, Eden on the bay... great views....

Enjoy

From town to Big Bay, Blouberg is about 22 km. You can ride from Green Point Stadium right through the city centre (well marked) and end up at the Station. There you have to search a bit to find the link from behind the startion out of town (easy to follow once on it, look for the red bus path) and on to Table View, Blouberg and beyond. Enjoy the downwind going there, but remember coming back can be tough if the Southeaster is howling. Traditionally we do our last pre-Argus ride on Table Mountain Road on Saturday, but perhaps this year I'll join you on our new cycle path.

I would avoid the stretch through Paarden Eiland and ride in the emergency lane along Marine Drive rather. The only security issues on this cycle path have been here and this close to the Argus is just not worth it. Typically the chaps are at the bridge going just under the N1 highway. I commuted to and from this area for 5 years before the path was built and I recommend going through the harbour to avoid the highway and take the emergency lane of Marine DriveOtto du Plessis til you meet the path at Steven Johnson Cars. Beware of the cargo train tracks in the harbour. You'll have 4 sets to cross and you don't want to hit these at pace for a pinch flat. Enjoy!

I have been riding the Cycle Path from Town to the Bayside Centre and back and it's 40km round trip from my place in Gardens. Easy out in SE wind conditions and a bit harder on the way back into the wind.

I can't say that I have had any safety concerns when riding around 7am in the morning. I would rather take my chances through Paarden Eiland than ride on Marine Drive.

or another option: Take the bus from the Civic Centre to Bay Side Centre and cycle back with a group if you are worried about safety. I suspect that there will be quite a few spinning out the legs.
