Duathlon First Timer - Run in cyling gear?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering doing a couple of upcoming duathlons and wanted to know about the kit you wear during the day.

Do you run in your running kit then change into your cyling gear when you cycle or do you just wear your cycling gear for everything?

Also when you run the is your bike in like a paddock with all the other races bikes etc?

Please advise

Thanx

Get yourself some tri shorts..

Its what they are designed for..

You want to be in kit that is comfortable for both disciplines.. So tri shorts - or a tri suit which is more expensive...

Unless u want to cycle in running shorts with no padding??

I would suggest a pair of tri shorts yes. They are like cycling shorts, but with slightly less padding so that you can run in them. Else you could change gear, but bear in mind that it will probably be in a public open space.

Yes, the bikes are located together in the transition area.

The second run is usually fun

Depending on how much you want to spend I would go for some tri shorts (someone recommended New Balance?). But I am doing my second little triathlon this weekend in cycling shorts. Want to make sure I enjoy it before splurging yet more money on my pastimes!

There is no place to change kit during transitions. Running in cycling kit can be done (Not tried bibs yet - can't think it'll be comfortable), and should be preferred to cycling in running kit.

If you have running tights, you can cycle in those (short duathlons), otherwise get the tri shorts, however they are quite pricey compared to cycling shorts/running kit.

This is a good suggestion. I would try running with cycling shorts first before spending money. Might be slightly uncomfortable with the padding, but nothing that hasn't been done before - especially if the run is not that long. Like HEman said, the tri shorts are not cheap. So this can work while you make up your mind about the sport.

Thanx for the headsup.

And with reagards to shoes?

You cant possibly run in your cycling shoes can you? :/

I did my first couple of duathlons in cycling shorts. It doesn't hinder that much and you can get a feel for the sport before spending money on tri shorts..

I'd probably ride with my running shorts on rather than running with my tightpant on. Or try this: Get a lycra running short (tightpant without padding, First Ascent has a nice one) and simply slip a cycling short over this in the Transition zone. Remove when Transitoning for the run, but try a ride with both shrots on first to see if this is at all comfy.

Would you suggesting running on running shoes then leave you cycle shoes at the transition zone with your bike?

Kit you do not use stays in the transition area. glasses/helmet/shoes/bicycle - when you run.

Yeah, your running shoes will be in the transition area, same as your bike. You put them on for the run and leave the cycling shoes there. You'll have a little spot in the transition area where you can keep all your crap ... I mean kit, and gear and stuff ;-)

speedo !! do swim, exit swim slip on cycling shorts (over speedo), exit cycling leg whip off cycling shorts(still got speedo on) put on running shorts(over speedo). do NOT try run in cycling shorts. believe me you wont loose much time in transition and its of no consequence even if you do. even if I was doing full iron man the last thing i want to do is run 42km in anything but decent run shorts and a loose run top and cap. No tri outfit will be as comfortable. so forget the glamour and fan fair get with what you are comfortable in. if you are not comfortable you are NOT.

most duathlons that are offroad will only have 5km first run and 2.5 km second run. your longest time spent will be on the bike... so swing it all in bike shorts.

the transition area is usually pretty secure and once you have entered your gear may not leave until everybody is finished.. so don't be too worried leaving cycling shoes and helmet waiting for you at your bike... if it's a mtb event some people even do the first run with their gloves on
