I'm looking to buy a Garmin watch but want one that can handle cycling and running.

Can anyone suggest a good one to get and if I need to buy any accessories to handle running and cycling.

310XT or the new 910XT

I have the 310XT but it is a bulky watch and by the time you put on the quick release bracket and wear it with the quick release strap it is even more bulky.

the new 910XT is awesome. However, I just got my quick release mounting kit today and will be using my edge 500 for running now as well, will be a bit bulky this is ok as I am not looking for style points.

For a not so bulky (and not so pricey compared to the 910XT) have a look at the 405CX. battery life not the best of all the Garmin units (7-8 hours per charge when using the GPS). Screen might be a bit small when on the bike.

Other option would be to get the Edge 500 or 800 and then fabricate your own wrist strap using the quarter turn lock, these units however do not allow you to choose your sport (running/cycling) as they are cycling specific. You will not have pace (minutes/km) as a unit either..

So ...

405CX (more of a running watch, cheaper, smaller, shortest batter life of those mentioned)

310XT (bigger, true multisport)

500/800 (expensive, cycling specific, "make do" for the occasional run)

910XT (latest, greatest, wizz bang, not sure about the battery life)

Note: 405CX battery life comments based on experience with *plain* 405

+1 The 310xt is bulky, but you get used to it very quickly.

Forerunner 410 (Garmin). With Cadence sensor. PErfect. The 310 and 910 are more triathlon specific. I have the 410 , but are considering 910 - just need to see swimming performance...I've not been convinced by bloggers and reviews.

I ride and run (up to marathon distance) and until recently used a Forerunner 305 for both (on wrist strap - never used a bike mount) until it died. It will be replaced by a 310 because the 910 isn't worth the extra expense for what I need. Originally I decided against alternatives, such as the 405, because they don't have the battery life I need for audax, though I subsequently got around that problem by finding a decent handheld mapping unit that uses AA cells. Obviously that won't do for runs or shorter rides.

Previously I used a Forerunner 301. Now that was bulky. Never bothered me, though. By comparison, the 310 - which suits me fine for running and riding - is dainty.
