Having Second Thoughts. Should I stick with 3x10 or use 2x10 at Epic?

I know I'm asking for it, but stuff it! I am planning to ride the Epic with a 3x10 drivetrain on my FS. In the run-up I have been training on my HT which has a 2x 10 drivetrain which I have enjoyed. Riding the Knysna 300 on a 26/39 set was fine and I had no problems at all. My mind was made up, but having gotten back on to the 3/10 last weekend, it didn't feel as fluid as

the 2 blade set-up. Open to comments.

Use what you're used to, bro. If you've been training with the 2x, that'd be the one to use.

Since I haven't done any, I'll ride on the coattails of Team Bulls' vast Epic experience - no untried gear for the Epic.

Or if you go with the 2x10, I promise to push up all the hills with you :-) ...

Q 1: How many meters can you climb in one week (not one day) with your ideal steep climb gear ratios available on your 2 x 10 set up?

Q 2: How many meters can you climb in one week (not one day) with your ideal steep climb gear ratios available on your 3 x 10 set up?

The answer my friend lies with the least painfull option

the granny on the 2x10 can handle steep climbs, but is a bit harder than the granny on the 3/10. Guess my brain is playing games at this late stage.

The Epic will probably be harder than any of your prep. And its days back to back. Would you risk walking up a hill because you ran out of gears, instead of packing in the 22 ring? I'd go 3x10.

3x10 will get me around the track, my mind is made up. Thanks for the input. My partner has decided to ditch his FS and go for his hard tail. My arse gets sore just thinking about it.

Let me just tell you this. If you are k@kking up the umpteenth mountain of the day at 14:30 with an abient temp of 37 degrees you might not feel so tough any more.

The Epic is not all 1:15 climbs and decents. There will be flatter sections. Then you will have the benefit of the 42x11.

Many guys (who haven't done it) will tell you it is not so tough. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the Epic.

Unless you are a podium guy/gal.

Read what SwissVan wrote.

Another thing. I have bent my derailleur hanger a few times. Sometimes you can get a gear to peddle by trying the other rings. Let's say you are in granny (24) and you need the 2nd or 3rd at the back. But the chain keeps jumping/skipping. Then you can try 32 (front) with the 1st at the back. Anything to keep moving.
