Personally I was never keen on putting myself in a position to have my junk scrutinized n felt a lil 'naked' in bib shorts, and so swore blind never to wear anything but baggies.

They certainly have their place in my everyday 30km or less park/trail rides. I prefer all things FOX. Any more than 30km I find bibs to offer a much superior comfort level from better padding that stays where it should, and it's far cooler (temp wise, not street cred wise) for longer days in the saddle, stage races etc. I find the baggies over a longer distance to bunch up in the groin area and actually create more friction where you don't want it. I was down at the epic, and saw only 1 guy in baggies, and thought "how is that okes region not killing him...?!". Every single other rider was clad in the toight stuff. There's nothing more retarded looking than a snug fitting 3 pocket cycling top with baggies, or Lycra shorts/bibs with a baggy freeride/trail/tee shirt.

so Gluteus Maximus, You gonna get Baggy MTB shorts or Lycra??

Wow!

It seems as if I scratched an old wound!

If anyone think that I will dress myself up as a guppy and put my dignity on the line like that, forget it!

Thanks for all the reasonable advice!

Max, I am glad you asked the question. I wore my Indola baggies from what seems like a decade ago at the weekend and my guy now wants a pair of his own. So, I'm doing some early Christmas shopping ... I had a look at the Fox baggies - they are a bit military looking (so far from the Lycra-look it's frightening) but I guess the insides of a pair of baggies is what is important. Will try and find some Indolas online (hope their chamois have improved since mine were made) and will also look at the Capestorm/FA offerings. (CS also has a military theme with their AKs. That silly ABSA ad for the Epic keeps playing in my head ...)

Glute, You'll find fox shorts rather easily available at LBSers. Pricewise though... they can set you back almost as much as our lycra friends spend on their "spanx". I've seen fox shorts range from R400 - R1000. (FYI the lycra lads can spend up to R1800 on bib shorts). I have found many of the MTB specific baggies to be a bit lacking. The fabric is often thin nylon that will rip at the first close brush with some shrubbery.

DH shorts use a different type of nylon and are designed so that even when you go bum-sliding down the gravel trail at 40kph, they won't rip. They are however hard to come by in SA, they weigh more (for the weight conscious), and they don't have those inners with the bum padding. Sometimes MX shops stock them, but the most variety is found on CRC... at a price of course (CRC price + 45% textile duty + 15% VAT).

So here's what I do...

I have DH shorts which I mostly use for riding DH

Then if it's a rocky trail I wear these as inners

They have bum padding (like a chamois), as well as high density padding for your hips and tail-bone. (Available at MX shops).

For dirt jumping, trail riding and pretty much most of the time... I just wear normal baggies, bought at normal clothing shops. Nothing fancy. I'll only wear an inner liner if I'm doing over 40km + (which isn't very often  ), and that inner will just be normal bib shorts. So yeah, fox MTB specific shorts are available all over. In fact Full Throttle (the motobike accessory shop) sells a range of Fox MTB gear. Hoss and Indola are available at most LBSers, and if you want the fancy stuff, like Sombrio, Troy Lee or Alpinestars you'll have to get it off CRC.

But in my opinion... for most of my riding, regular shorts do just fine.

NOTE: All inners, be they impact protection shorts or bib-shorts are worn UNDER baggies. Not in top (like a super hero), not on their own (like a dirt roadie), but UNDER

Show him your DHL line video.... it's all thats left to do now... maybe thats why you "sound" like that... not asthma but rather the fact you roll without padding???? :w00t:

PS> If it's a rocky trail then i wear a SMILE....especially while i'm busy passing a 29er mounted by a dirt roadie.....
