the person going the slowest must stop

Easy to say if you are the faster one coming down.

If the slower guy is busy with a moerse climb, do you expect him to stop, get off and carry on walking up further?

Its easier for the guy going down to get going again than it sometimes is for the guy going up.

Given that the guy descending might not always be immediately aware that there are climbers coming his way!

I say use common sense.

To me the person with the easiest way of getting back up to speed needs to stop.

I know nothing sucks more than stopping midway through bombing your favorite singletrack but think of the guy climbing who's pace and rhythem comes to stop when he/she needs to pull over for you.

Yes. That is correct. That's why according to IMBA rules on a 2 way trail the person coming down needs to give way. If you are coming down 2 pedal strokes and you are flowing again. For the dude coming up coming to a complete stop and uncleating sucks.

4. Yield Appropriately: Do your utmost to let your fellow trail users know you're coming — a friendly greeting or bell ring are good methods. Try to anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to other non-motorized trail users, unless the trail is clearly signed for bike-only travel. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill, unless the trail is clearly signed for one-way or downhill-only traffic. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

. The problem with common sense is that it is not that common.

Yes. True. That's why rules exist.

Thats true! A well placed PK will also work!

No. If everyone followed a simple set of rules there would be no need for PK's. The problem with the world is that people don't follow the rules and people like you advocating violence to get their version of "common sense" across.

Who must stop for who? Always tough its the guys going down that have the right of way.

International folklore says people going up have right of way, and a lot of SA seems to have adopted that mentality. Though going through old PPA and CSA manifesto's they actualy have it right and state people going down have right of way. Its safer as.

1. 99% of ST is designed to be ridden downhill and thats generally accepted.

2. The people going down do so at speed, and have less time to react or find a place to pull over

3. Going down you have more noise and your only looking 5-10m ahead of you and by the time you see an uphill rider its generally too late.

The return of argument of the uphill riders .....

1 ... It takes more effort to stop and start again.

Clearly a PK wouldnt be enough for you, only a RPK will suffice.

By the way who decides these rules? Some bloke with a keyboard & blogspot? Until the next guy chooses to edit it?

This topic has been discussed many times and still no one know these "rules" exactly.

No. The IMBA decided on these rules many years ago. I know what a RPK is. I was also in the army. Aren't we lucky to have people like you in the world that think that the loudest voice wins the argument.

I'm going riding now. I'll be sure to yield to all P's like you.
