Very simple.

  • remove useless der's and shifters
  • remove cassette
  • drink a beer
  • fit chain tensioner to where the rear der was
  • fit loose sprocket on free hub body loosely
  • shorten chain to fit sprocket and tensioner
  • shift sprocket along body to ensure you get a good straight chain line (Look from behind the bike and get it right)
  • Mark this position on the body with tipex
  • drink a beer
  • remove sprocket and add spacers to get the sprocket on the previously mark tipex spot
  • re-assemble the lot and go for a ride
  • drink a beer and smile

I looked into doing this, I am pretty hands on and do all my bike servicing, but deceided for my SS build to rely on the LBS, I was lucky that my frame had horizontal dropouts so I dont need a chain tensioner. All that was required was to put on a 16 tooth - I could have done this myself, the tricky bit was finding and installing the correct BB (compatible with my Campy c-record cranks) so that the chain-line was correct.
