TNT1 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 blah So, what you actually mean is that the OP should distinguish between the different types of mtb riding? Comparing Burry to Peat is like comparing Andy Schleck to a man, innit?
Dirtbreath Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 What's up with the bmxers using road pedals and shoes?
patches Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 So, what you actually mean is that the OP should distinguish between the different types of mtb riding? Comparing Burry to Peat is like comparing Andy Schleck to a man, innit? Well yes, different types of riding would require different pedals. I would hate to dirty jump clipped in. At the same time, i would hate to ride endless miles of district road on flats. But regardless of riding format, there are skills learnt on flats that are universal (like bunny hopping properly over obstacles). So what Dean Bean said is valid... He feels he missed out on some of the essentials by going straight to cleats. As for comparison, yes one can't compare Burry to Hill or Peaty when it comes to technical ability... And i don't even know what i would compare Schleck to
DR ◣◢ Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I have yet to see that. Shimano makes a BMX/DH specific pedal used by BMX racers
Dirtbreath Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 I have yet to see that. Shimano makes a BMX/DH specific pedal used by BMX racers I'm not 100% sure but thought I saw the elite men on the start ramp with road clip ins and road shoes.
patches Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 What's up with the bmxers using road pedals and shoes? you are referring to BMX racers, right? (and not to street, park, freestyle, or dirt jump bmxers). Most racing bmxers that I've seen use as shimano dx or 5.10 minnaar spds. But I'm guessing that the few who use road pedals and shoes do it for the power transfer. bmxers have been known to bend frames at the start gate with all the power going through that 44T. I'm guessing they want to eliminate the risk of unclipping involuntarily while laying down such a force. If that were to happen, serious injuries could ensue.

A few of them do use road shoes and pedals.

Bet you even money not one of them has ever come close to applying the same sort of power that someone like Hoy does at the start of a race.

patches Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 True, track cyclists are in a league of their own... So i will not take you up on your bet ...but where did Hoy start his racing career?

TNT1 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) True, track cyclists are in a league of their own... So i will not take you up on your bet ...but where did Hoy start his racing career? Ok, change Hoy to Wiggo, or Cav, or Merckx (yes, Merckx even saw fit to win lots on the boards). Same thing. Edited October 5, 2012 by TNT1
nickelass Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 ride cleats on my xc bike, and flats on my all mountain/freeride bike(mbuzi)seems right to ride flats on downhill and jumping.I like the feeling of being able to ajust position of your feet prior to jumps and just feel more confident on flats.I think its good to be able to use both, and feel confortable.I enjoy more freeride so 80% of my riding is now on flats.
DR ◣◢ Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Dirtbreath is correct. A few of them do use road shoes and pedals. Very interesting
DeltaAlphaMike Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 For me as a new mountainbiker (about 10 months now) I have learnt some very interesting things about the differences between flat and cleats. From what has been said in this thread I am actually considering going back to my flats for a couple of months. On the other hand I have been trying to learn to do things on my bike without the aid of the cleats such as bunny hopping. I have almost got the bunny hopping without using the cleats correct though. Then again from what has been said in this thread maybe I should hang my cleats up for a while and go back to the cleats to develop my bike handling skills. Decisions decisions
TNT1 Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 (edited) How do you okes bunny hop a road bike? All this talk of bunny hopping on compression and stuff is pure bs. Edit, the things that compress and spring back and act as levers are all there, they're called my arms and legs. With a healthy whack of spine and buttocks. Edited October 5, 2012 by TNT1
