Hey there!

I've been cycling for about 2 years, very casually. The past few months I've actually started training instead of just pitching up for races.

As a result of the increased cycling and training schedule, I've noticed that after a short while cycling, i begin getting numbness in my toes on my right foot. I'm not really sure why this happens. It happens while riding road, MTB, and spinning, all 3 using different shoes, so I think I can rule that out.

Last year I tore the ligaments in my right ankle quite badly, didn't need surgery, but a couple of months of physio before being able to run again. Is it possible that this could be the cause?

Any other suggestions as to how to find out what the issue could be?

Thanks,

Spurs.

Are any of the shoes carbon soles? It might be a certain amount of pressure on a certain place that is causing the area to react. Carbon soles seem to eliminate this. Just a thought

check your bike fit.

I had numbness in my toes.

was corrected by increasing saddle height, and decreasing stem length.

Could be anything from width of saddle to what's mentioned above or that you injury has resulted in lack of flexibility in that leg, pulling you out of alignment (you can tell I'm not a doctor-just thinking out loud).

Do a ergo or bg fit -you won't regret it!

Go for a check up with a good sports related Podiatrist.

One possibility could be a "dropped metatarsal" which can cause numbness followed by pain as riding time increases.

Thanks for all the responses!

Nope, none are carbon soles.

Do you use the same kind of socks? Prehaps they have a seam somewhere?

I've used a couple different kinds of socks, same result unfortunately

I've been fitted to both my bikes (is that what an ergo or bg fit is? :whistling: ), and haven't changed them since then. I'll try a bit of stretching and see if there is any difference in my left side vs right side flexibility. Worth a try for sure.

What is a dropped metatarsal? I think i will try a few other tricks, and if no luck then see a podiatrist. This talk of metatarsal worries me, I forgot, but I also hurt my foot a few months ago doing muay thai, kicked someone's elbow. Initially thought I had broken my metatarsal, but never got it checked and it healed, hopefully this is not related

Basicaly its when the metetarsal bones have dropped  lower than normal and as a result there is more pressure on it when walking, running or in fact doing anything with weight on your feet. The increased contact pressure on the affected joint area causes swelling which in turn affects the nerves in the area of the joint which might cause toe numbness or pain.

I have this problem in both feet and the only thing that seems to relieve it is to move the cleats on my cycling shoes quite a bit further back (had to extend the cleat slots +/- 13 mm). I can literaly feel the "dropped" joints in both feet if i walk barefoot on a hard surface.

Hahaha, that would make sense! Ok, I guess in that case i would have to see a podiatrist first before trying any shoe adjustments. Thanks!

I had the same, and loosened my shoe. sounds stupid, but a true story.

My initial thought was that this was the case, but I tried that and also no luck :(

Doesn't sound like "dropped" metatarsal, and don't think its foot related.

Could be due to tightness in the nerves running from your back to the leg/foot.

Ask a Bio/Physio for some neural streches.

I recently started having pain on my left hip........ or so it felt. Went to the doc and it seems like a nerve pinching in my back. First question was if my toes get numb..... not in my case but it seems that back problems can cause this.

I must go for to see a Spinal Orthopedist for tests, scan etc.

Jip... Will depend on which 'part' of the nerve impinges - could be sensory, or motor (muscle) part that is affected. You also have different areas of the leg/foot served by different nerves
