1*9 on a 26" XC bike

Coming together, collected the chainguide from Thug this morning, collecting some short chainring bolts from Grumpy at CycleHub later and the frame will be ready at 3PM :)

11-34 Cluster also sorted, thanks Grumpy!

Any thoughts on using gripshift versus trigger for this build? Thinking it may just look neater ......

3) Any suggestions on 'middle of the road' gear options to start with?

I was thinking something a bit more 'manly' than yours Bob :whistling:

Mine? I don't even have one, tool.

And if I did, I'd put CX tyres on a track bike. Pussy.

I have read through this thread with interest but may I ask why you chaps do this? Is there a valid reason or is it just for the hell of it?

I never use all the 3x8 gears on my XC bike. So I have a 2x9 upgrade in the works. And technically, the 2x9 works more cleanly that the 3x8. And the 1x* better than that.

Adding to TNT's reasons... Extra clearance for the technical stuff; extra training cos I'm now forced to use one ring on the front and don't have a granny option anymore; cleaner bars and just plain simpler.

Ya, you're a tool.

But there are valid reasons why the pros run a stripped setup.

OK stoopid pratt these are the reasons I am doing it ...

I already have a 'normal' 3*9 HT MTB and bought this frame at a good price (cracked and I had it repaired). I have a perfectly good old alu HT for donor parts.

Since this bike would only be used for my training rides through a specific route over which on my niner I only use 1 chainring I decided to just put on what I need for that.

Like my SSR it would be a good training 'tool' as well, as stated no granny granny so you gotta use what you got!

May even use it for some XC races but I seldom do those these days as I am no longer a big race-ist .....

And as someone said today its simpler, more reliable and lighter ......

Lest ye all forget my SiL owns a bike shop hence the amount of bike/bike stuff I have
