Hi guys,

I want to get a 20 inch mtb for my son for his birthday in September, I want to get him something decent, so far the Momsen and the Specialized Hot Rock come out tops, difference is the Momsen is rigid and the Specialized has a Suntour fork.

Momsen goes for R4k and Spez about R3,200, leaning toward the Momsen just from a weight point of view, the forks on most 20 inch bikes seem to be a waste of time.

Any thoughts or suggestions ?

I agree with your lean toward Momsen.

Your son will probably pick up better skills with a rigid fork - his bike handling will be better overall.

Saw an awesome Pyga bike in the latest Bicycling that Patrick Morewood has made for his kid, unfortunately it's a one off custom, would have been very cool.

The Momsen looks really cool, and I doubt that the absence of a front fork will make much of a real world difference.

I bought my daughter the Silverback Eclipse 20", and have been very impressed with that. And its about half the price.

I got my son the Mongoose Rockadile for Christmas, a really great bike, the spec is good and he loves it, but, I would have gone for the Momsen if I had more money, the Mongoose is 12,5 kgs and the Momsen is 8,7, for a lightie that is a massive difference, imagine you could drop your bikes weight by almost 50%, the absence of a suspension for on the Momsen is no big deal yet, and you can always retrofit one at a later stage.

The Mongoose was around R3,5k and the Momsen is around R7-8 I think...

Depending on your budget there are only 2 choices the Mongoose Rockadile or the Momsen, I investigated the specs of all the brands and the Mongoose won the spc battle hands down. The Avalanche spec was poor, the Scott was tha same as the Mongoose with a better fork, but waaaay too pricey, the Giant was also ok, the colors were *** and the RD was shite, the Silverback, Titan and GT were similar in price but the spec was far inferior to the Mongoose.

Another plus with the Rockadile is that the top tube is bent down a bit, so it is a lot easier for a short lightie to climb onto the bike and less chance of them drilling their pill box on the top tube. The Cyan color of the Rockadile is nice too.

Momsen 20 inch is R3,999 so not that much more, agree with you weight wise, thats a helluva difference for a kid

Buy an Avalanche Max. It is less than half of what you are going to pay on the other 2 and he will outgrow it in 2 year's time. He is too young to enjoy or appreciate that benefits of an expensive bike.

oh, nearly forgot, how about a lil' shredder?

nope and don't ask!

the cool thing is you can get them on 16" wheels and then convert the frame for 20" wheels later......adds a little longevity.

must say I also find the kiddies bikes a waiste. My kid is 10 turning 11. He was riging a 20 inch last year, upgrded to a 2nd hand 24. When I wanted to start messing around and upgrade components, when I started riding, I realised that it is pointless. I got him a small GT 26inch. 50mm stem. giant comfy seat all the way to the front And he road it. Sure it is not a perfect fit but it was his and he was imensely proud of it. Given that we upgrade our components you pass those old ones on to him. He now sits on a small XTC with some stunning kit on (11kg bike) and he loves his bike. Best of all it can grow with him for the next 5 years or so. If you can get him on a 26inch frame, any size, get that rather. You can always swap frames and the rest of the components can be his bike. They can grow with him. Cheapest and best way imho.
