I recently started using a rear mounted bottle cage system as my new mtb frame cannot accommodate two cages, but am battling to find one that holds a bottle securely, yet is still easy to get a bottle in and out of.

Would be interested to hear of success (and/or failure) stories.

Cheers

I have the same problem. Initially I used a saddle mount and neatly launched bottles into the air when I hit a bump hard. Now I have a system that works.

The seatpost mount consist of two seatpost clamps, not one. That way there is not way the bottle cage can flex/pivot. I think Specialized makes these brackets. Then I use a Lezyne Power Cage (http://www.lezyne.com/bottle-cages) The shape (open "neck") of the cage makes it fairly easy to remove a bottle, but it also holds it tight. If you still loose bottles, wrap a piece of duct tape around the edges of the cage - it act like rubber and keeps the bottle from moving. If you find that the saddle is in the way when you need to remove the bottle, add a few spacers between the top bracket and bottle cage to rotate the cage backwards. Rubber washers work great for this.

I use the specialized bracket and cage. While it is sometimes a bit difficult to get the bottle out (especially if caked with dried mud) I've not had a problem with it popping out.

Use the Specialized brackets with a Specialized SIDE entry bottle cage. Works perfectly. Have not lost a bottle in 3 years of using this combination.

I use a specialised side entry cage on specialised mounts - that lets me almost jam the top of the bottle under the seat (need to to get wheel clearance for the bottle on a small 29er suspension frame) and it does not come out easily - only lost bottles when falling.

I have broken a couple of mounts seemingly from plain wear and tear, and so far the spes ones seem the best - keep the cage close to the seatpost.

Also using the Spez side entry cage. Got mine at Linden. Attached it using the Momsen Bat Wings. Only one ride so far, all the way down the spruit and no issues. Granted it's not the most technical of trails.

I use the spz mounts fitted with the giant carbon cage and fitted a bit of tube/o ring between the wings havent lost a bottle ever, I only keep my backup bottle in it and rotate them when I finish the one in my front cage.

another thought i have is to get a slide bracket made to fit to the seatpost mounted brackets that will allow the cage to mount to the slide bracket and be slid 50mm or so below the seat post clamp, if I get it made I will try post pics.

Don't get the Spez Rib cage. I've broken 3 and despite promises to get them replaced nothing has happened. Bought a cheap Blackburn cage and haven't lost another bottle. Ok it's only been 2 races.

What are you trying to put in them to break them? a 2lt coke? I've had them on my road and mtb for 4 years and have not had any hassles.
