Hey Hubbers, so about 3 weeks ago I was in the race form of my life, probably the best I've been in years until that inevitable crash. I was gymming regularly 3 times a week & riding +-10hours a week but zilch for the past 3 weeks except the knsyna double which I barely scrapped through due to injury so my question is do I start from the beginning or can I just pick up from where I left off, any coaches out there or guys that were in a similar situation who can advise? Thanks

Is there are no injuries then you can pick up the riding right where you left off if you like from a riding point of view. Tkae it easier with the gym though as I would guess over 3 weeks some of the neurons may have got lazy so your strength may not be exactly there. Take a week or two of easier weights to activate those extra neurons.

But what injury did you have?

Surly best to start with a 1-2week base/build zone of rides before going straight into it?

it would not be a bad thing to do that, it is just such a short break that he would not have lost much of his mitochondrial density so getting back into it would not be much of a problem, especially at only 10 hours of training. If it was longer, say 4-6 weeks then yes, somebase would be good, but considering he did the knysna double, I suspect his aerobic base is already pretty good.

But like I say, what injury he has will determine the rest of the advice.

I fell on my thigh/hip/back, impact was hard. Muscle bruising only all around the impact area I.e. ribs(possibly a crack as per physio, problem is I can't tell cause I have no pain threshold), hip, glute & lower back.

Mmmm maybe that bit of base for a few weeks may be goodafter all added with another visit to someone who can check your alignment to make sure you are going to heal properly to avoid future injuries.

The main impact was On the buttocks so when I did knysna I was off the bike That entire week leading up to the races. I felt most pain in the glute/lower back when I pedalled hard, thus

I Had To Keep pedalling at a lower intensity. I couldn't resist the good weather yesterday 1hr easy spin & today 3hr easy spin to tempo. With little to no discomfort.

I'm practically back to almost 100% fully recovered & have decided to start with 2 weeks base before moving things a notch up again. Thanks for the feedback guys.

You do not loose fitness that quickly as to loose fitness your arteries and capillaries need to "degenerate" to the status you had before you started initially. However, you loose sync between the muscle fibers/cells within the muscle, controlled by the nerve endings that tell these cells to contract when they have to. By implication, if your muscle was conditioned to run on 90% of the cells (your brain always reserve a number of them for emergency), 90% was conditioned to contract EXACTLY at the same time they had to. Now, a few weeks later that 90% don't contract together anymore. So, all you have to do is to reinstate the sync again. And that you can do through a "bridging" period and it will take around 14 days of specific training.
