Hi guys. Wonder if anyone knows what I can do or put on my knee to try fix my knee or something I can do to relieve the pain. I hurt my knee just under the knee cap. How long does knee pain take to go and how long should I take off in order to recover?

Hey man, did you knock it?

When does it hurt? While you ride?

I've got the same problem and need to go to the biokineticist

Or sports physio if they're different (cheaper?)

Could be lots of things but if its a patella tendon strain you can keep that bothering you for months if you dont treat it / rest it right.

If its a traumatic injury, then follow the following regime (ICE) for a few days:

Ice - 20 minutes 4 hourly - be careful not to freeze the skin - put the ice in a plastic bag and wrap in a tea towel of similar

Compression - light compression bandage - not too tight

Elevation - elevate the knee as high as you can get it comfortably whenever possible - sleep with a big pillow under the knee joint - not resting the ankle on it.

If it does not improve within 2 - 4 days, then see a trusted sports doc/physio and go from there.

If it's an overuse injury, then the Ice and Elevation combined with rest should help, but you need to find and treat the root cause.

I am having the same problem.

Did a road ride 4 weeks back and injured my knee somehow while climbing Franschoek Pass. Started MTB and did the Robertson race the weekend before, so I have put it down to change in geometry.

Adjusted the saddle height (dropped it a little bit), and knee pain during ride has gone away (for long term I hope) but this morning my knee hurt again.

Chatted to a physio over the weekend and he said that it could be a number of things. Could be ITB but could also be a muscle development thing i.e. that the muscles are used to working in a specific manner and now there is a demand of a different movement. I asked if it would go away - his reply was, either it will get better over time or it will get worse. It just depends on the muscles and tendons.

Edit: although my knee pain is to the outside of the patella, not below it.

I've been through this and it is traumatic because it takes a while to heal. One hubber forgot the R in ICE, meaning REST unfortunately.

Daily stretching routine. Whatever is causing the pain avoid it for a while. In the case of ccycling the cause is often overuse (caused by the repetitive nature of cycling). i wasted money going from specialist to specialist. REST is the only panacea

how old are you? I find that of late my body just takes that much longer to recover. I recon for a 35+ year old stuff like that can take years if bad. But I would not get dispondant if it still bugs you after 3-6months if it was not too bad. Knees, like shoulders and elbows etc, just take long cause they are used all the time. I once ran into the wal playing squash and my shoulder got tweaked. Took 3 years to sort itself. Suppose I should have gone for an op :D

I had the issue pre Epic and it was a number of changes that helped heal it. I started off with 6 weeks rest but the pain kept coming back!

Solution

1. Bike set up particularly seat height.

2. Changed pedal stroke from pushing heavy gears to lighter ones with better technique.

3. Did cross training to strengthen other muscle i.e. gluts, hammies.

4 don't rush in easy miles low intensity and build back.

And I spend thousands of rands on scans/surgery ( they never operated), physio, Lyno (ouch) and physio's.

But from not been able to ride 5 km without pain 8 months later the Epic was done and dusted without issues.

My problem is solved - MTB saddle was too high. Did Die Burger MTB race on Saturday and a 75Km road ride on Sunday and was 100%.

I did also focus on keeping cadence high versus grinding lower gears at a very low cadence.

Hope you get sorted and back on the bike soon!
