Cycled on an old Raleigh when I was 6. Never really got into the sport.

Really started cycling when I was 27. My wife and I looked at what sport we could do together and settled on cycling. 3 Years later I am loving and my wife hardly rides. We bought exactly the same bikes and I figured when my parts wear out I'll just take the parts off her bike

Around 14-15 for me, had no choice as I had to get from our farm in Natal to the local bus stop, about 5km on dirt roads.

Funnily enough thats when I first got bust for smoking as well, a lesiurely ride home with ciggy in the mouth and the deputy head happened to be

driving the same road! Six of the best for that one!

Got my first bike when I was 6. Got a black Ralleigh Panther ... pretty indestructable. It had to be cause I was quite a hooligan on it and wiped out pretty well every now and then. But that was my transport. Cycled right up to matric when I went to do military service and started working. Got back on the bike in 2001 when I decided it is time to get fit and drop a few sand bags around the middle.

I see "start cycling" and "learnt how to ride a bike" as 2 different things.

I learnt how to ride a bike when I was 4 (1989)

  • Bike: PnP special, 12" BMX with plastic "meg wils" and foam tyres

I started cycling when I was 25 (2010)

  • Bike: Morewood Izumu DH bike

Agree I was on a bicycle long before I started cycling...

what defines "cycling"? Due to my geographical location as a kid,, eg: out in the sticks in forgotten little town, or on a farm elsewhere I "raced"/chased whatever I could find. Buses / tractors / lorries / bakkies

Or are you only "cycling" if you wear lycra/spandex and use cleats?

This is what Google tells me if I feed it "define:cycling"

cy·cling/ˈsīk(ə)liNG/

Noun: The sport or activity of riding a bicycle. Synonyms: bicycling

Red emphasis is mine

If so, then I still don't 'cycle'

My interpretation is that "cycling" is when one participates in the sport as a hobby. But I'm no dictionary

Well that could make an interresting debate. If I did not learn to ride a bike at a young age, and that being my only means of independant transport as a kid, I would not have been able to perform fairly well in the sport of cycling which I took up later in my life. As a kid I properly would have kicked most sporting cyclist arses on my pick & pay special while delivering news papers.
