I wanted a cheapish set of hydraulics for my Singlespeed earlier this year and bought a set.

 

Can't compare to my Hopes but they're perfect for the SS.

Just exactly how do you "rate" brakes ? Either they stop you or they dont ? Or am I missing something ? How could one set be better than another ? SUrely with all the technhology around today brakes from different companies are more or less on the same par as they all use hydraulics ?

 

Will the average Jo cyclist really notice the difference ?

To expand on that...m

 

Different braking systems have different efficiency ratings due to the folwing variations

 

FLuid reservoir design

Bladder design

Internal chamfers / profiles of same elements

Cabling

Piston design

Pad design

Materials used

Tolerances

 

And as with anything mechanical, the smallest variance in any of these would make a huge difference in how the item operates.

1. Take a bike with juicy 3's down a rough technical downhill

2. Now do the above with xt's

 

That will answer your question

2. Now do the above with xt's

 

That will answer your question

 

I ride with juicy 7's, and they work exactly as needed, slow me down when I need it, and stop when I need it (occasionally operator error results in non stopping when needed), so they are fine.

 

I also ride a bike with deore breaks along more or less the same and they also work exactly right, doing everything needed.

 

I get the ease of servicing and break pad replacement, but at the level I ride, I dont understand the difference in the rating, hence me asking.

Modulation is the ability to apply different amounts of

braking power easily. IOW, you pull the lever a little, you

slow down a little, you pull it a bit more, you slow down a

bit more, and so on, until the wheel locks. Some braking

systems are more prone to be either not slowing enough or

too much, where good modulation allows you to control this.

 

IME, disks provide better modulation, which enables you to

apply more braking without locking the wheel. I don't think

it is a compromise as any braking system will enable you to

lock your wheel(s) if you pull hard enough, which is not

good for you or for the trails.

Modulation is the process of a driver accurately controlling the amount of brake power required without locking the wheel. Brake modulation is having the ability to consistently increase and decrease the amount of bite from your brake pads at will

For the average rider those do suffice i agree.

 

The only reason some people put xt,hopes,r1's on their bikes is the fact that they have full xt,xo,xx gruppo's - and it would just be wrong to fit average brakes.

 

Some would say its the difference between braking with one finger (xt's) and using two or more fingers (lower spec)

I run Hope Race on one bike and Deore on the other. Massive difference in brake force and brake control.

 

The Hopes are single finger setup and has huge amounts of stopping power with very little input needed.

 

The Deores have more than enough stopping power but very little control. The power is on or off. Grab a good handful of lever and the Reba will dive down hard into its travel. Also fades quite badly on long downhills.

 

I like both but wouldnt mind replacing the Deores with Hope Tech X2.

 

The 650B will also run Hope Race.
