FIRST TRIATHLON TO BE STAGED ON ROBBEN ISLAND

Robben Island Museum has granted triathletes the privilege of racing two trail triathlons in one day on Robben Island in the first ever Tri-Robben Island race on the 9th of September.

Tri-Robben Island offers athletes a truly historical & prestigious experience as they spend a day on the island where Madiba spent much of his time in prison. Tri-Robben Island offers a truly diverse experience with the swim being in the harbour, and the cycle and run legs taking the athletes to the various landmarks on the island including the Limestone pits, Lighthouse and famous WW2 cannon.

The race will consist of a morning sprint distance of a 400m swim, 14km cycle and 4km run with the afternoon race consisting of an 800m swim, 28km cycle and 8km run.

Race Entries are open for only 27 days up until the event - each day for each year Madiba was in prison and proceeds will be going towards the development and rehabilitation of the island.

Entry prices are as follows

Morning Race 16 years & above
(Swim: 400m Cycle: 14km Run: 4km): R 575.00

Afternoon Race Solo 18 years & above
(Swim: 800m Cycle: 28km Run: 8km): R 775.00

Afternoon Race Relay 18 years & above
(Swim: 800m Cycle: 28km Run: 8km): R 2,325.00

“The idea behind Tri-Robben Island began in a conversation with a triathlete, and friend of mine, from Germany who came to Cape Town to a visit.” says Grant Kunneke, creator of Tri-Robben Island. “Before a tour to Robben Island he asked me to give him some more background on the history of the island and was stumped when I, like many other South Africans, knew so little. This struck me as Robben Island is essentially the beginning of democracy in South Africa. From this point I made it my objective to change this and what better way than with raising awareness through the first triathlon on the island.”

This monumentous event will be filled with historic and iconic South African music.

Have you entered yet

Nope. Remember what happened to Challenge Cape Town?

Not to bring up old cows but it was cancelled a few weeks before the event due to lack of organisation i.e. road closures we assume although we are still awaiting the exact reasons but Grant and friends have just dissapeared of the radar althogether after the fiasco and plenty of okes are still waiting for their refunds. Cost me a fortune not to mention the pain of training for an IM distance event only to not race at all..............

Search on this forum, there was a thread although I have to warn you it is not for the faint of heart.

I remember this.. I would have been very Pissed.. I was trainign with a guy who would have raced and he put in a lot of time which a sorry and blame shift does not make up for...

Having said that, Its around the corner and might actually be a go this time. Garfield, at least you can go meet the guy and give him a piece of your mind, in person ;)

You should read it again...

Hmm, then I'm missing it. Are you responsible for getting there yourself? Might have to make the swim leg a bit longer if there's no space on the boat.

seems like the ferry trip is included in the entry free thats why it's higher than usual

From the race schedule it looks like there are 3 boats organized? That's kind of why I assumed the ferry trip was included. But, you know, assumption and all that.

I just said you should go read it again based on how Grant organised The Challenge race. Dont want you to get there and then you charged another couple of 100 bucks
