its a difficult one, if you do get into the whole cycling thing, you will definately want to upgrade at a stage, then you are stuck with an entry level bike that you wont get your money back on... so push that budget as far as you can..

But then again, maybe you dont really get into the cycling thing and you keep going on the entry level bike and you are happy...

just my opinion, doesnt help really, just planting a seed...use it, dont use it..

Agreed but that is the top end of my budget, as i said before 3 kids and a wife to feed.

Maybe keep your eyes open for a well cared for 2nd hand bike?

If not then someone who's riding opinion I trust, has had very good things to say RE the Momsens ride.

Make a matrix to help you

List the bikes as the columns and then use your gut to rate the components.

Bike 1 bike 2 bike 3

Fork 4 3 4

Shifters 3 3 3

Brake 2 5 3

Drive train 2 2 2

F derailer 5 5 5

Rear derailer 5 4 4

Rims 3 3 3

etc ... .. ..

etc ... .. ..

etc ... .. ..

SUM total 100 80 94

Price R9500 R7500 R8500

Matrix 10.5 10.6 11

= Sum/price*1000

What i do to make it easy is to give the best components in a range from the manufactuer the hightest rating

For example

Shaman XTR = 5 pint XT = 4 point SLX = 3 point

Then divide the points with the cost and see which is the highest.

Then buy the one you want regardless of above result  .....

Nice, buying a house would be an interesting matrix...

If you ride a medium or smaller sized frame, you don't need a 29er - get a good second-hand 26" bike. There are awesome deals out there ('cause everyone wants a 29er!). I'd rather ride a well cared-for, lightweight 2nd-hand high-end 26er than a low end, heavy new 29er.

Please help me, I am looking at buying an entry level 29er (wife & 3 kids to feed) and their are a number of choices ie Scott comp, Giant ?? and trek mamba that all look good. Which one in your opinion is the best value in this bracket?? Many thanks

You want entry level...for the price of an underspecced entry level 29er you can get a really good 26....by this I mean good groupset and fork and a lighter bike..... and then later you can later buy a top of the range 26 or 27.5 or 29.

I have looked on the hub for second hand bikes my problem is that how do you know if the bike has been well looked after!! Its like buying a used car, things look good on the surface but deep down there could be serious problems.

I can appreciate the issue you have because I have been looking at new and second hand and to be honest the price differential at what I am looking at makes new a more appealing option, one simply cant know how a bike has been looked after, how much trail work it has done. In the past I have bought second hand but was more pure luck than any exact science. My thinking if you buy second hand be prepared to budget for at the very least a full service.

Where this all get confusing as its all really opinion, can most us really tell whats objectively better? For example I went to three bike shops last weekend, all told me different info!
