Can someone please give me advice wrt buying a compressor so that i can exchange and inflate my tubeless tyres instead of everytime going down to the bike shop.

1. What size would one need?

2. Where would i need to go and buy it( what shop)

3. More or less cost? ( new or second hand)

im based in Cape Town

Cheers

Make sure it has a filter and regulator attatched so you can control the pressure you use - 8 bar sounds good, but will destroy tires and some rims too.

You will be ok with anything over 25 litres tank size, 50 liters is more than enough for use.

Second hand small compressors tend to be worn out and leak oil into the tank and air - this is not good.

Any decent hardware place will stock small compressors, Builders warehouse, Makro, Dions etc all have them, as does Adendorf.

What you spend on one is up to you - R800 up - spendiong more generally gets you a better device, but exactly how good it needs to be for occasional use is a good question.

My only advice is - get the largest diameter hose you can find.

The secret is not the pressure or size of the tank (within reason) - the secret is to get as much air volume into the tyre as quickly as possible so it's "snaps" in place straight away. Too little volume and you sit holding a hissing tyre with sealent pissing all over the place.

any idea what the bike shops would use? How much compression/litres should i look at?

Like the others said - Makro is the right place to start. Any large store should be fine - shop around a bit.

I have a 20litre tank and with it set at 4bar I can snap most tubeless tyres into place.

Usually it is the connectors that are the issue/fault - trust me you don't need any diameter more than 8mm for your hose - 6mm would work too.

All the bike shops I know have a 50l compressor, which is enough for them.

Many thanks for the info. My knowledge of this is nil but i get frustrated that i have to part with bucks when i can do it myself.

I have a T-max 160L/min compressor...main use is car tyres(going to moz...inlfate & deflate tyres on sand) but it works a charm for tubeless conversions.

Bought it at 4x4 megaworld for about 1000 zars.

PS you need to buy a little adapter thinga-ma-bob at lbs to fit bicycle valves

The top one is good enough

This would be the minimum spec for inflating tires

This is as big as you need to go - Makro have others in a similar sizing.

If you want to go big - buy this - http://www.airsupreme.co.za/products/cubesd.php with a tank - never run out of air with that.

As an aside - you could probably use one of these too - good for 4x4 useage - made in SA in Somerset West, and you can seat a 4x4 tire with it.

I have something similar (in addition to 2 compressors) made up from a paintball gun tank, remote line and tyre inflator - but at an unregulated 800psi, I don't plan to use it on my bikes tires.
