Tall (dark & handsome) Boy

Be sure to keep the leftover Fameskin bits as templates for other Tallboy riders...

Great idea! I was thinking that one could take the "negative" sheet (decals removed) to any local place that does vinyl signs and stuff and have extra sets made. These things only last so long before looking manky, so it would be cool if one could replace them perhaps on a yearly basis.

Hey guys, sorry about neglecting this thread - things have been kinda hectic at work and at home

The plan is to spend Sunday afternoon/evening applying the Frameskin kit. It's gonna take a while and I don't want to rush it. Then all the bike bits will be photographed for the "before" series. Dis fred needs mor pichas!

The actual build starts Monday! Looks like we'll be building with the standard brake hose, because the Jagwire adapter kit has not yet arrived.

Update time: Okay, so it took the WHOLE day on Sunday to apply the Frameskin decal kit. What a PITA! But, I have to say, it is well designed and is sure to protect the frame against minor mishaps. Having finished the job around midnight, I just did not have energy left to take pics. Sorry guys.

We hit a major stumbling block in the build, as well as a minor one. First the really bad news: I ordered one of these to convert the QR rear Hope Pro II Evo to 12x142. It doesn't work  The kit fits the DT Swiss thru-axle and TBc frame perfectly, but it does not fit the hub itself! There is a huge amount of play between the kit and the freehub  LBS will try to source another conversion kit.

Smaller prob: it seems there is not yet a Jagwire brake hose adapter kit available for new Shimano brakes. Will have to stick with the stock brake hose for now. This is trivial compared to the above issue - I'm not keen on learning to ride a unicycle...

Wow. This has not been a straight forward process.

Bizzare that the conversion kit doesn't work!

Yeah, I think this bike will be named Murphy.

I suspect the kit is for an older model Hope hub. Was there a plain Pro 2? Without Evo in the name? The description on CRC is not very detailed, but I should have checked more carefully.

As for the Jagwire kit, I hope LBS to be mistaken.

I have done some digging around as I see that there are 2 different 12mm axle conversion kits.

See this thread: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/converting-a-pro2-evo-rear-hub-to-142x12mm

'the one is 135x12 and the second is the proper 142x12'

The descriptions on CRC do not explain the differences, so it would be easy to order the wrong one.

It would seem that you need the X12 one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=47535 and not the 135x12 one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=21849

Hey Splat, thanks for the links.

Hope are very fast in replying to tech queries. They confirmed what I suspected. The kit I have is for Hope Pro 2, which is an older model of the Hope Pro 2 Evo. It is the X12, not 135mm as it fits the frame just fine. It just does not fit the hub properly. Damn. Oh well, I'm entitled to at least one noob mistake on this build, right? ;)

Anyone who wants the kit for their older rear hub is welcome to have it free of charge - just pay shipping costs.

Please explain the conversion kit problem,

I ordered my wheelset also with a Hope Evo2 12x142 for the rear.

nothing was said about a conversion kit.

Ah yes. I didn't read your post properly. The kit fits the frame, but not the hub.

The Evo has a larger axle diameter, I think. That would explain the play you experience.

Have you found the right conversion kit then?

CRC hides theirs here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=68578

Hey G,

IIRC all Hope Pro II Evo rear hubs, except the 150mm, can be interconverted using conversion kits. I ordered the hubs long before deciding to build a DS. They were supposed to go on my Storm - hence the QR rear. The wheelset was hijacked for this build and that is why the rear hub needs a conversion kit.

If you ordered yours 12x142, you should get 12x142 ;)

I left the kit search up to the LBS - will phone them in a bit to hear if they've found one.
