I have a Thule rack on top of my car and the arm holds onto the frame . I now have a carbob bike and wondering weather it is the best idea to have something holding on to the carbon frame that apply forces to it ?

Will it damage ( crack the frame ) possibly?

Do I just add some sort of protection where it clamps onto tthe frame ?

My crabon frame is currently being repaired after Thule clamp was too tight... I think the solution is to put a cloth around the frame where clamp grabs, and then never fasten it tightly at that point

would the frame not damage easliy if not tight and it starts to move/slide around in the clamp

will have to look at the new Thule one that does not clamp onto the frame

I've seen the Thule ones for freeride and downhill bikes which clamps over the top of the front wheel. Looks awesome.

I use a Saris Bones 3. I've had several Carbon Bikes, Mtb and road. I always use foam rubber where the frame meets the rack. No problem.

Always secure the bike - make sure it’s not swinging behind your car, I also secure front wheel, either to bike rack (helps minimize swing behind car) or to your bike frame.

Also ensure Carbon wheels are not close to your exhaust out let, serious heat generate in this area which will cause serious damage/defect to carbon frame/Wheels.

How weak are your wheels? Do you think you can bend a wheel by putting your full weight onto it?

Always wondered this myself. Can I take my road bike and hop of a pavement with no damage?

Yebo. My 85kg fatass once hit a large pothole at 80km/h on the road bike*. I got pinch flat front and rear but no rim damage or bending or anything. I used to bunny hop railway lines, potholes and small animals. Ride off pavements no problem.

*Should not have been slip-streaming that truck but was young, fearless and stupid.
