Good day all, I need some advice please.

I cracked my 2012 Silverback Vida 1 Frame.

Silverback told me they can replace it with the new 2013 Vida 1 frame, but I am not so sure that I want to go that way. The reason is because if you compare the 2012 Vida 1 to the 2013 Vida 1, the 2012 model is specked much higher than the 2013 model. There is also about a R4000 price difference.

It seems that they are now focusing more on the carbon models! So in my opinion I think they spend much more time on the frame design for the Vida 1 in 2012.

Weight:

2012: 11.4KG with XT and FOX front suspension, non-tapered

2013: 11.3KG with SLX/DEORE and ROCK SHOX REBA, Tapered

The FOX is more than 200 Gram heavier than the REBA

They will also give me an adapter to convert the non tapered FOX suspension to fit into the tapered frame of the 2013 model, which in my opinion is not natural.

Now, take into consideration the resale value. Will I be better off with the 2012 or 2013 frame?

Will they not only replace your frame? In other words, rebuilt all your current components onto a 2013 frame. My wife had her Mercury replaced this way twice, without any issues from Silverback.

You had to have the frame replaced twice?

Yep. First there was an issue with the 2011 rear-suspension design, and then the paint started to peel after a month of using. Happiness since.

Ah, I thought you had had the bad luck of having a frame crack twice!

What? 6061 is a magnesium alloy - 0.8-1.2% Mg

Tell me what alloy the 2012 model was and I'll tell you if it was worse or not...

Edit: The 2012 is a "Magnesium Alloy Series 1" which isn't a standard designation so who knows what alloying elements are in there...no way to compare the two alooominums.

i had the same thing happen to me twice.

1st the vida 2 2012 frame cracked at the seat tube then the frame got replaced with a vida 1 2012. now the 2012 vida 1 frame cracked at the chain stay. the said that they will replace the frame with a vida 1 2013.

All i can say is that i am very impressed with the service from Gecko cycles arranging it all ,they even organized me a loan frame till the 2013 frame arrives at the end of October.

Silverback guarantees work.

Yes, frame replacement only!

I am not sure about the alloy compositions.

I am also going to get a loan frame (2013 VIDA 3) while waiting for the 2013 VIDA 1 to arrive.

Interesting why they can supply me with a VIDA 3 now! VIDA 1 stock only arrives next month.

Hope They can sort out the adapter for the tapered Frame.

EXCELLENT SERVICE FROM CYCLE FACTORY!

Why would you want the same frame that has cracked before? I would take the new one you never know there might have been a build problem with that year.

I don't know if it will be a better quality frame since it is in a cheaper price range. They don't always improve on frames, maybe they used even cheaper materials. Sometimes you have bad luck with frames!

As mentioned they'l most likely swap the components on to the new frame, the parts from Modanine (XT parts) were swapped over to Mercury frame
