So....I will probably be able to ride Schapenberg most weekends, Tygerberg during the week and Bottelary weekends or weekday, but longer ride to get there.

Which one is the 'best'? What are pros and cons? Who is offering discount this late in the year?

I do ride Majik often and must say I love it.

Still say since PPA is involved..there should be a resiprosity(like with golf clubs) where onemembership gets you discounted at the other venues...

or ablanket membership covering a couple of venues...

I'd say Tygerberg has more climbs and more single track (various degrees of technical). Bottelary is more cross-country type training. I don't know Schapenberg, but Welvanpas is also great for weekends.

I think both Tygerberg and Bottelary offer discounts on their permits for the rest of the year.

If you enjoy Majik and ride it often, Tygerberg would probably be most convenient with the corridors linking Majik, Hillcrest, Contermanskloof, Kliprug and Meerendal (and of course Hoogekraal is not far away).

But there isn't really anything like "best". It depends on what you want to do. I think Tygerberg offers the most variety.

cool, thanks. Schapenberg let me know that the R 150-00 per year is valid for 365 days, so I joined this morning. Just waiting to hear back from the others. But tyger sounds like the best choice for now.

As someone that is very new to MTB. (My bike is still being bought) Where should I start riding. I live very close to Bottelary (Zevenwaght). But I know that there are a few entries into the hills. Where should I start

As far as I know, there is an entry point to the Bottelary trails from Zevenwacht. Should suit you perfect. Bottelary consists of several loops. If you're short on time, ride one loop. If you want to ride longer, add other loops. And Bottelary isn't very technical which should also suit people new to the sport.

I was a member of the two men team who built Hillcrest, Kliprug and Meerendal, as well as some sections in Majik. We also did the whole of the Bottelary Trail system and are still working on improving and expanding the Bottelary trails.

Musashi is correct that Bottelary is more cross-country type of riding where you can ride up to 5 hours and about 60 kms if you do all the different route options. Tygerberg has the most singletrack, but we are adding single track to Bottelary all the time – there are about 8 kms of single track at Bottelary at present.

I myself do my weekday rides on the Tygerberg trails, but on weekends I am always at Bottelary as I am a cross-country type of rider.

As Musashi said, there isn't really anything like "best". It depends on what you want to do. Go and ride the different trails and then decide which trails you like best.

Bottelary permits are discounted to R240 for the rest of the year – price for 2013 will be around R400.

@FanieFiets – You are going to use at least R50 of fuel to get to Schapenberg, so that R150 permit is not cheap. From Durbanville you can get to all the Tygerberg trails as well as Bottelary with your bike.

@ Mulmi – all the starting points for the Bottelary Trails can be found on www.bottelaryhillsmtb.co.za. Your nearest starting point will be at Zevenwacht – the trail is signposted from there. Not sure how fit you are as a new rider, but you will need some legs to get up the hill!

thanks Dirtman, awesome info. I do not have ride to Schapenberg just for the trails, my gf lives there and I'm 5 km from the entrance most Fridays to Monday morning.

I'll wait until next year you join one of the other clubs as I dont think I'll ride them enough to the end of the year to make it worth it.

Botlery route is great, ive only done the grean route so far and its not easy going, got some killer climbing. From my house its about 22km loop and i do it in about 1h20min.... it has a nice mix of cross country and has a nice section of single track towards the end.
