You have a least got the mail!

I had heard about this a few weeks back - when I was on the PPA committee (up till this years AGM) I warned them about having funride in the Southern Sub of over 1500 riders. In fact for this reason and this reason alone I was in favor of the Cycle Lab event charging a higher fee. Naturally this fell on deft ear - I was the S@&t stir-er (racing snake) on the committee. Had PPA controlled the numbers of entries (be it by having a higher entry fee) for the ride in the Southern Sub along with reducing the number of route would have changed this out come I do not know, but it may well have. I always stated it was now a privilege for Funriders to have funride in the Southern sub! What really surprises me is that we lost Chapmans Peak and Constantia Nek a number of years back and PPA did not try and learn form this!

Looks like a max of 6 road funride in the western Cape next year before the Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour - not so long ago and I do stand to be corrected their were at least amount in just the month of Fed!

This is from the PPA site. They state it is due to roadworks or are they in fact telling porkies?

Summer 2013 events

We are in the process of finalising the details for the Summer 2013 events – amongst others, the road works in the southern suburbs (Fish Hoek area) has meant that no events can go over Boyes Drive, Main Road around Kalk Bay, or Ou Kaapse Weg. As you can imagine, this has posed quite a challenge to the organisers. However, alternative solutions have been found, as follows:

JANUARY 2013

Sun 6 Jan: Journey for Sight. New venue and route from Fish Hoek

Sat 12 Jan: Potential new MTB trail opening in the Greyton area – watch this space

Sun 20 Jan: Cyclelab funride – route and venue to be confirmed, but possibly in the Boland area

Sun 27 Jan: Bouckaert-Soenen league, road and MTB funride. Usual route and venue in Paarl

FEBRUARY 2013

Sat 2 Feb: Franschhoek Lion Porcupine MTB Challenge, Franschhoek

Sun 3 Feb: Tour de PPA. New route and venue, Durbanville

Sat 9 Feb: 99er Cycle Tour, Durbanville

Sun 17 Feb: Medallion Tour de Stellenbosch. Usual route and venue, Stellenbosch

Sat 23 Feb: Wellington Lions MTB (MTB only)

Sun 24 Feb: to be confirmed – Bay City Cycle Tour

MARCH 2013

Sat 2 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB

Sun 3 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay MTB

Sun 10 March: Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour

Sat 16 March: PPA Wacky Wheels Overnight Fun tour

Sun 17 March: PPA Wacky Wheels Overnight Fun tour

Information will be uploaded to the calendar section of this website as soon as possible.

The mail from cycle lab about the cape cobra stated that it is due to the roadworks. Has been tentatively rescheduled to september 2013.

...

(Steenberg, 22 November 2012) For quite a while, Main Road between Muizenberg and Fish Hoek has had extensive road works. The road works are currently near the Main Road/ Boyes Drive [Kalk Bay harbour] intersection. A stop and go system has been put in place at this point and only one lane is open to use. Due to this, vehicular traffic has been requested to use Ou Kaapse Weg as an alternate route when possible. This has hugely increased the traffic flow over Ou Kaapse Weg.

Because of the above and specifically the increased traffic on Ou Kaapse Weg, we have now formally been advised by the Cape Town Events Office that NO routes will be approved that make use of Ou Kaapse Weg, or Main Road/Boyes Drive for Summer 2013.

I want to know what is happening with the PPA fees I have been paying for the last few years that are now sitting in offshore accounts whilst my racing wheels gather dust in the garage.

What am I training for exactly? At this rate I am not renewing my PPA membership, will sell my Zipps and put the money towards mtb. What a ******* joke.

Indeed!

Love those climbs...

Struggle to keep up with the roleurs in Spring...

ok that makes sense then. although i doubt the traffic on OKW for a sunday morning is that increased compared to pre construction(which has been there for 4 years anyway).

fishhoek routes could be good actually.

Not much the PPA can do about the roadworks. Or am I missing something?

Move the races further South.

Also, the roadworks are opposite Kalk Bay Harbour. I'm looking at them now. Nowhere near Ou Kaaps.

PPA have massive reserve funds, contributed by us, the paying members. You cannot tell me some kind of contingency could not have been planned for, so that the members could have got what they paid for?

I think you guys are being rather harse on PPA. They are trying to make sure they find alternative routes for the races. One of them starts in Fish Hoek like some people suggested.

They can't help it if the City of Cape Town decides that it doesn't want races on Ou Kaaps. In the end its for our safety. While there might not be a lot of traffic early on a Sunday morning, a lot of the slower riders would only be going over Ou Kaaps later in the day. If its the only route in and out of Fish Hoek, I can imagine the drivers getting quite irate if they have to sit behind cyclists all the way up.

Agree about the reserve funds and the roadworks are not a secret so a contingency should of been made far in advance that said no contingency has been made and if motorists have been advised to use Ou Kaapse as a post above suggests then it does make sense not to use the road for a cycle race as much as that irritates. The PPA seem to be trying to make a plan and keep races on the calendar.

I do not see anyone else trying to organize road races and if we shun the PPA and they stop organizing the races how many would be left on the calendar.
