Why is brake hose so expensive? Bought 1m of Shimano Bh59/63 yesterday and it was R150. Plain black hose! Two sets of olive and inserts were R30 each. Bought brake pads at R220.

Costs me more to do the brakes on my bike than on my old Sani 4x4!

Oh, and another R250 for some Shimano mineral oil! madness!

Agreed, it's ridiculous, from what bikes cost to spare parts, it's become a very expensive hobby / sport. I can see no reason that brake pads for my bike should cost more than those for my car, it's silly.

Ok, so what can be done about it? No real alternative for brake hoses, or pads. Guys have tried alternatives for Shimano's mineral oil, but nothing works as well as the original. You could run Avid brakes that use much cheaper brake fluid. We could always go back to v-brakes... tongue.png

Geesh dude! you got ripped!

Goodridge hose is cheaper per metre than that... and it's Goodridge! It actually makes your brakes better!

EDIT: the fittings however are quite pricey for a Goodridge conversion. But power and feel increase is worth it... plus it comes in various colours :D

ordered a Jagwire kit for my build last night, pretty sure even it is cheaper.

Jagwire Mountain Pro Quick-Fit Adaptor Shimano XTR M985(2011-2012), M988 (2011), Deore XT M785 (2011) - $18

Jagwire Mountain Pro Disc Hose Black Carbon 3000mm Requires Jagwire Mountain Pro Quick-Fit Kit - $40

Ja, it is mad, I got my GF a new fork and have had to lengthen the brake hose and we all know what its like when there is a new toy, it must be sorted out TODAY!

Where do you order that Goodridge hose from? Does it work for Shimano (mineral oil) or only normal DOT4/5 brake fluid?

I get my Goodridge from CRC. Yup, the hose works for Shimano. you can either buy the Shimano kit (104 and 107 if I remember correctly) with hose and fittings all included. Or if you want to customize your colours, get the hose (sold per metre) and the appropriate fitting kit.

Is that Goodridge hose more flexible than the Shimano stock? I've got a tricky routing here and it has a few bends...
