I was given a Go Pro Hero2 to use as its not being utilized by owner and just want to know - where is the best place to mount it - helmet or using the chest strap? (this is not for races yet but more for fun at this stage) I need to get the mount still so before I do, would appreciate some advice! And where is the best place to buy the accesories?

I tried it once on the helmet and let me tell you, that is crap!!! That unit don't feel heavy, but believe me after about 40km you WILL feel it. I had the problem that it keep pushing my helmet forward and after a while my neck got really tired.

If i can give you advise, get yourself a bike mount and fit it to your handle bar in the front (or seat post if you like). I did not try a chest mount yet, but can think that it can work as well.

Regarding accessories....you can try any big bike shop, incredible connection as well as Cape-Union Mart. They stock basically everything!

I bought the handle bar mount (actually I don't think it was, got one that allows for bigger oversized handle bars) and cost about R320-R350 at Hot Spot Cycles.

Will go make a turn @ Hot Spot - but I am thinking maybe Solomons might be a bit cheaper. Do you not get a lot of shudder from the handlebar mount?

From experience with helmet cams the past few years ... you need several mounts as per above advice. Terribly boring to watch a beautiful piece of singletrack for 60 minutes. Use the mounts/gorillapod as suggested and change the mount and shot angle every 5 mins, yes I know, stop/go affair. At the end you'll have some variation and enough material to produce yourself a 5-10min clip of your ride. Benefit is you'll have a clip you like to watch yourself. If you don't you'll end up with hours of boring footage on your 3TB HD that you never watch. Kind of knowing you have nice memories stored somwhere but too difficult to go find.My 2c.

Solomon's GoPro stuff is (surprisingly) expensive. Best prices between Hotspot and Sportmans Warehouse (or online)

I've got a ton of mounts, handlebar, chest helmet etc. The helmet strap gives you options to mount it on other places than your helmet (Like on your bike - forks, downtube etc) and the handlebar mount is a nice and quick way to get a few different perspectives. Chesty gives a good overview, with your arms and bar in the shot. Play around with it A LOT - the best way to get good footage is to have different angles. It's Booooooohhhhhringggg to watch a whole trail from one perspective.

Good spots to mount:

Handlebar facing forwards

Handlebar facing back and up

Fork facing forward (backwards from fork causes motion sickness)

Seatpost facing forward - use an extension to get it at least 10-15cm's from the post, otherwise you see to much leg :P

Seatpost facing back - nice trailing shot, even if there's no-one behind you

Downtube, by the BB, facing forward - obviously don't try this when you have to go over rocks or logs, but this gives an awesome shot, especially going through water.

As for vibration on the bars - I've cur an old inner tube up and stretched a piece twice around the bar where the mount goes - it does wonders.

Next thing you know you are sitting up all night editing videos.

Planning on getting one of these in December for some of the of the AM/Trail riding stuff.

I saw some footage of it attached to the downtube by the BB but figured the rocks may do some damage. But thats worth a try when the going is better! Awesome hints here - and yes... my luck I wil probably be up all night editing - but thats ok - save that for when the insomnia kicks in!

Yeah, you get damage to your case, but they're replacable :) You can replace just teh bubble lens on the case, costs like R80 (and it's worth it if the footage is good:) )

Are you using the rollbar mount when mounting with the inner tube?
