Respraying aluminium

Hi,

Doing a SS build and wondering if anyone knows anything about respraying with regards to type of paint?

I believe most frames are powder coated out of the factory but resprayed with enamel based paints when refurbed???

Which brings me to question 2, I have a family member with a sand blasting box and he believes the best way to remove powder coating is sandblasting with iron filings, is this harmful, will it work, and any other ,better ways?

This will be my first SS build as well as respray and just wondering if anyone has any tips with regards to respray as to whether I should strip the frame and powder coat again or do a respray with spray gun?

Have the tools, need the advice.

Cheers

Sam

Looking for a professional and durable finish as this is for a SS mtb, will need to clear coat to protect paint job afterwards aswell.

Best paint for the job would be a 2K automotive paint, sprayed with a proper gun.

You don't need to strip the powder first - in fact it is better to keep it on.

Just sand it to get a consistant rough finish to get good paint adhesion.

Plascon Removall. After all the old crap is off, prime, flatten and spray with 2k or duratheyne, finished by a clearcoat.

Simple, goodlooking, hardwearing and cheap

Thanks, Wanting to do cool colours, anyone know where to print giant frame decals to go under the clear coat or is it better to do a reverse stesil, or base coat the colour of the word and stick down a decal and paint and peel?

Removall works well.

As I said in one of your other posts. Spend time reading through the Single speed threads. You WILL find answers to all your questions so far.

Search for Tyrone here on TheHub. He'll recreate some wicked custom decals for you.

Your cheapest option is to chemically strip and powdercoat. I went down this road a few months ago. Was quoted R250 by a local guy. Paint cost (clear, hardener and thinners alone came to around R600. Gotta buy a litre of each). Ended up chemically stripping to raw ali, rubbing to get a nice looking grain and a mate with a panel shop cleared it for me. Had stickers made by a sign company. Came out very nice! Total cost was around R150!!

Oh yeah, I forgot about Removall. Just make sure to prime afterwards.

Don't sandblast an aluminium frame. The metal is too soft and will be damaged by most sandblasting. Some types of blasting mediums are more gentle and can work, but they are not very commonly used. Best is to strip chemically and with lots of elbow grease and sandpaper. Although you can over-paint, I like stripping to bare metal. That way you know you won't have any chemical incompatibility with the old paint or coat messing up your new finish.

ive just stripped and painted my frame for an SS build. its a mission let me warn you. but a lot cheaper than getting done professionally. if you can afford it get a pro to do it. otherwise heres what i did (rattle cans)

1) sand - i used a cheapie wire brush kit and a drill.

2) primer - 1 can

3) colour - 2 cans

4) clear laquer - 1 can

if you want some more detailed help, PM me.

If you want a paint stripper that is legendary then get something called nitromors. You can buy it at builders hardware, just paint it on and leave it for a bit. It activates with a bit of heat. Be warned though it is vicious and a small drop on your hand will start to burn like you have been stung. It will take off multiple layers of paint.

Get a good primer coat on the frame to start, build it in layers, and do a very fine sand in between coats with 600 plus grit paper. Also do it between color coats and you will end up with a really lustrous finish. You can do it at home with a compressor and spray gun. Finally once all your color is finished, a good coat of clear. Use Durathane K.

Thanks for the replies, I manged to get it off in a sandblasting box at a mates factory. Using extremely fine iron filings, comes off easily and pretty easy to do. Result is very nice, takes a bit of time to get all of it off, but the end result is well worth it. I prefer this method, to chemically stripping as the chemicals of too strong will go too deep and penetrate the metal, sometimes messing with your primer. i'll post my pic, looks great, but a little bit rough in places, just needs to be wet sanded with 220grit, (done it in a couple places and finish is so smooth).
