Go to a sports store and buy the stuff they stick onto cricket bats. Designed for hard knocks. Good stuff.

I use the same film they stick on cars to protect the paintwork. It works extremely well protecting against stone chips, stick like you can't believe and it lasts! I used this one, but can't remember where I got it from (5 years later ) Try motorbike shops, they use it too.
