a pedestrian actually has more probability of escaping an accident, a cyclist doesn't. Velocity vectors dont lie. Also, when they get stupid going the wrong way, they get more stupid with those lights, blinding motorists who supposed to stay in the left lane, right lane for overtaking. But no, now motorists must move to the right just to make way for the roadie in teh wrong with a lazer upfront. the idiocy is compounding by the pedal stroke. and that 1.5m rule? does it still apply that you are doing the wrong thing going in the wrong direction? also, who has right of way between two cyclists going in opposite directions on the same portion of verge? There's a thread about such stupidity around somewhere. It's as silly as the roadie in the morning along teh cycle lane that refuses to ride on the dedicated cycle lane, rides in the road instead, and going against traffic. I mean seriously, are you (not the OP) that important whoever you are? yikes.

as a generalisation, that everything works out the same after vat, customs and whatnot is a gross overstatement. What I have noticed of late however, is that there is increasing price parity on items, and in some instances, it's massively cheaper at the my LBS of choice. However, I'd still pay for variety and choice, and this where local is just downright not lekker. Much of the northern hemisphere winter stuff will be going on sale now, and try get that stuff here, much less at the prices you will eventually pay for it.

that's been my experience as well: taxis have been very mindful, as well as truck drivers. Car drivers give most crap, but that's probably cos they are not on the drive whole day and climb into a car with a bunch of stress from work/home/last memory of inconsiderate cyclists. BUt the rank worst experiences thus far come from tour bus drivers. They scare the crap outta me.

it would be preferable the roadies get over themselves and unbunch in more ways than one, then no need for unnecessary pills to bypass the irritations taking up the road. Attitudes like kosmo's undermines mutual respect on the road, because each side tells the other to take a chill pill. just flipping awesome. i guess when a cyclist jumps a red robot despite there being traffic around to trigger a normal light change, the traffic officer and everyone else must also take a chillpill. well well, time to invest in chillpills.

moonlight mass at night is 'convenient', as more often than not, rules of the road go far out the window on these rides. I just hope our well meaning intentions this evening around the back end of peak hour (still a crap of vehicles in and out of the city, especially in sea point) dont reveal the hypocrisy when it comes to riders respecting the rules of the road while demanding the same and more from motorists.

skinnyone: while u on that course, take particular attention to the testing criteria applied to aircrafts, and then revisit your analogy about failures on bikes versus those on airplanes. Spit happens, this is probably one of those instances. CF is not a panacea to all things breakable, as your second generalisation pointed out that 1% dont suffer impact prior to failure. Anyway, the OPs more pissed he didn't get some proper loving from whomever he is dealing with.

maybe the OP needs some slack: been going through a website dedicated to carbon fibre failures (loads of love there ), and it seems quite a few folks have had sudden failures without crashes. One guy in particular said he's bike failed after hitting a transition from a descent to an uphill. anyway, seems those clean breaks are quite common and happen elsewhere on CF bikes. thta's the roll of the dice it seems with CF parts.

Maybe the more sudden failures are cleaner.

I'm glad someone actually mentioned this. That does not look like the failure of a composite product. No fibrous endings from the photo. Could the OP post a close up of those broken ends?
