I also rode the B&B descent in the mud last year. I'm not sure if you can truly say you've done the Berg & Bush if that's all you've done. I certainly feel like i've got unfinished business there.

You guys missed out on so much of the good stuff !!! I was lucky in that I did the Great Trek last year and got the best of it.

Doing the descent this year so hopefully it will good weather.

Last year was quite extraordinary. I enjoyed sloshing around in the mud, but it wreaked havoc with my bike. This year it's a few weeks earlier which hopefully means less chance of that kind of rain. Looking forward to it!

There are plenty of bottlenecks at Sani Trail (esp day 2 later batches) <_<

So don't underestimate the "technicality" for the average rider.

I reckon they need to have enduro type sections on day 1, where you're timed down pieces of singletrack. Then that gets used for your batching on day 2. After racking my brains while stuck behind people that can't even ride around a switchback, this is the only viable idea. The lack of basic bike skill on Sani is astounding.

I like the way you think!

I was stuck behind one guy who was super sketchy. When we got to the part with the big bermed switchbacks I had had enough, so uvertook him on the inside of the corner. Needless to say he wasn't impressed, but I couldn't stand it anymore.

But Sani is batched, even day 1 is batched using your sas seeding. But for day 2 they use your day 1's results.

It's frustrating, at least when I am at my slowest I am walking off the track on the climbs

yeah... but what he's saying is that day 2's batching should be done from day 1's technical descending singletrack times. Like a race within a race.

Some people get good overall times/batching cos they're fit and climb well. But they can't ride off a kerb, so on day 2 they hold up other more technical riders on the descending.

100% I think there was a lot of guys frustrated, not soo much the race guys we were pretty much all SLIDING DOWN THE UMKOMAS at the same pace:(

Did you maybe overheard me when I spoke about this.

We were playing like yo-yo the whole time...on downs we will try and pass the slow one's only for them to over take us on the climbs. (Worst is, at most climbs there are more than enough place to pass, but on the downs/single tracks (the super fun ones) it is practically impossible.

Ahh ok, I see. There is only one piece of singletrack that can be used on day 1, and that is the section leading up the bison bridge. That was our redbull run at j2c. You got timed when you go into the dual track and then stopped over the bison bridge. There is an issue with batching according to that though, you might get held up by someone and get a really bad seeding not reflecting your ability and also people will wait for clear runs at the start of the timed sections causing more traffic. So I personally think they have the batching right at sani for the amount of people doing the event.

If you want a clear umko, up your fitness and get a better seeding....you know, do 5 extra star jumps in your training sessions.

My seeding on day 1 was about the same as the other 2 days. But I found day 1's singletrack way less congested. Maybe because they were shorter segments so the riders didn't pile up in a long string.

But as you say... for the amount of riders that do the race, it's hard to find the balance.

If there were less, they could implement an enduro style prologue where riders are let go one at a time, over a technical descent, the results of which determine the seeding for day 2's long descent.

Again though, this would take up too much time. And it wouldn't be Sani.

So if I want to have uninterupted singletrack, I'll just stick to DH, enduro, and riding in France where I cause the traffic jams

Actually you might have great concept there, Umko enduro challenge....Doing the umko 5 times a day, with a shuttle taking you back up. I will pay good money to do this...Another great Enduro trail...imo probably better than the Umko is Longdrop pass. Rougher and less manicured, and lots more fun to ride....

We did the Trail and we had no bottle-necks on day 2, I think we were seeded C for day 1 & B for day 2.
