You must be mal my China! You just reminded me that I took a pick with the signage in as well....

I would love to say that I didn’t hit the drop off because of my bruised ribs or because I was riding alone (both true tho) but unfortunately that drop off is just out of my league for now. I took photos of the drop off and proceeded down gravity via the bull runs and up to the pallet drop by the N3 and down through the old freeride trail which is more my league

Yep, I havent hit it yet, and dont know if I will .. The stuff on the other side is cool. Bumblebee bridge, the gap jump etc.

That is a proper drop.

That is a proper drop.

I would be more inclined to just go for it if the landing didn't intimidate me so much, slight off camber and looks like it could get a little loose.

Probably nothing to worry about but it's got me thinking twice!

I think (read: as far as I know) the Charger and new (2014) Revelation RCT3 dampers are actually fairly similar in terms of how they work, but they're different in terms of what level they can work at due to the additional oil volume provided by that massive bladder in the Charger. It keeps the oil cooler and cleaner, so it's more reliable over the *really* rough stuff than the standard RCT3 (which is also DNA and has Dig Valve and Rapid Recovery).

I can definitely feel my Revelation RCT3 (2014 upper assembly and internals) starting to take a bit of strain on really long descents, but it's incredibly sensitive to small stuff and surprisingly adept at big hits due to the DNA valving. It's pretty amazing how I can run it on Pedal mode and have practically zero dive due to the low-speed compression damping, but still swallow the big hits.

The Pike of course also has those fat and stiff 35mm legs...

What's you Rev with RCT3 like on small bumps when in pedal mode?

Ya, the landing is twisted. Bad things are going to happen down there.

I'd say it's about 15-20% (don't ask me how I came up with that figure, I'm thumb sucking here) less sensitive than in open mode, if I run it with LS compression completely open. I've found that it's too unforgiving if I crank up the LS even a little bit.

It's a funny thing though, the initial feeling is "oh crap, I'm not going to have any traction riding it like this", but it's actually not bad, it's more of a perception thing I reckon. I've forgotten to flip it to open on a downhill runs a few times; never when getting to the bottom and realising this have I really kicked myself, it's generally still quite well behaved on the small stuff. Maybe not absolutely as good as it could be, but still perfectly acceptable.

In open mode, I have to pretty much crank LS compression all the way up to feel any effect, where in pedal mode it has a much more pronounced effect. This is probably why I prefer to leave it fully open and just flip between open and pedal (read: I'm lazy  )...

Your post was the final little push I needed to buy myself a Pike. I've now put a couple of rides on it, and holy crap its good. It is sooooo smooth and supple over the small stuff like roots and square-edged hits. Makes me realise what a POS my Fox 32 was. I was worried that I wouldn't feel any difference from the Fox, but it is night and day. The Pike is like a magic carpet ride.

:) Well done man!

What impresses me the most is how it holds up on really long downhills without loosing any damping, and it's really forgiving on your arms. Utter control and precision.

Here is a Reign 1 update. The tyre on the front ZTR Olympic rim is a Bontrager 2.2 - its narrow and leaky, but very light. The rear is similarly equipped. The wheels are on dirty flea hubs and weigh about 1650g.

I am not entirely mad. The bike weighs about 12.9 kg in this form and rolls way faster than stock (e540's Hans Damp SG and Nevegal) at 14.1 kg. It also pedals up hills like a rocket in comparison.

So far the wheels have held up well on the rocks and landing a 3m gap jump on Firehut.

The point is to have an XC/fun ride worthy 150mm travel bike for longer rides with my wife. A simple wheel swop and I am back to heavy duty . Houw Hoek Tour here we come.

Niterider Kiwi - that bike looks familiar but the fork?

The camera angle makes those bars look scary narrow !

Posted

They are std 730mm so not that wide...

730 is cool. From the pic they look 580, but it's just the angle and the proportions.

I'm amazed at how quickly you get used to wide bars. I went from the 6 hundreds into the 7 hundreds, up to 780 and now that feels normal. Rode a bike the other day with 730 bars and it felt narrow, and it's not that narrow !
