I'm always curious how much *** they give you brining one of those in.

Tempted to sneak one in the shopping bag in mid-honeymoon.

Know if Canyon has a frame-only option?

I actually flew out with a cheap **** bike and dumped it that side, so I wouldn't get caught coming back in.

But to be honest they don't even keep any record of what you fly out with, so it's unnecessary I reckon.

If you gonna buy something over there. Just take it out the box, assemble it, ride it and get it dirty... And then pack it dirty to come back, maybe use a different box, and you should be fine.

When I flew back in, they asked me "is this new" and I just said "no" and they let me through! It would be very hard for them to prove it's new if it's packaged dirty etc...

Oooh, think you might have just publicly admitted to tax evasion......

That did cross my mind when I was writing it...

I don't even know how they define new... But my bike was old when I brought it back... Don't think SARS is really worried about stuff like that. It's probably more people bringing stuff back and then selling it

he has. And there are some members who are actually employees of SARS.

Besides - the overall difference on a bike is 10%. Remember that EU VAT is 20%. Ours is 14% - and the duty on a full bike is 15%. Which makes our VAT & Duty equiv to 30%. So you could claim back the VAT when you leave the country, and pay just 10% more when you get here. And that's totally legal, and won't get you a tax evasion investigation.

On a R 30k bike, that's R 3,000. Is the price of your potential tax-dodge conviction and / or fine worth that? I think not.

Purchased by a south african resident whilst overseas. It's pretty basic, really...

"Remember that EU VAT is 20%"

Andorran VAT is 4.5%. Swiss a bit more than that. Almost no price inflation year-on-year, unlike what is about to happen with bike prices locally this year.

There is a lot of quality bike shopping to be done outside the behest of Brussels taxation regime.

Cheers guys, I don't think this is the right thread to talk about tax implications of bringing a bike back... Was just answering the question asked about bringing a bike in...

"Was just answering the question asked about bringing a bike in..." What is the tune on that Debonair for the two geometry shift patterns? I think it is very ambitious, forward-thinking technology.

It's HM I think... Can't remember offhand, nor do I understand much about shock tunes...

Ignorance is bliss. Less tax calculations and more feedback on how the bike rolls over thingies.

Appreciate the response. I also intend on Julias'ing a Canyon if the opportunity arises.

Just beware of the waiting periods for Canyon and YT bikes

On my way back from Singapore one year I had a list made out of stuff I bought with receipts and everything. Nothing expensive. But I hate when they rummage through my bags so I thought I'd prepare and try to avoid that. We land in Cape Town and my daughter throws up. She's a mess. We decide to change her on the airport since it was a long flight and we just wanted to get off. By the time we get our luggage she starts crying. My wife picks her up. Now they both dirty. We rock up at customs. A noisy, filthy family smelling of sour milk.

They just gave us an 'oh hell no' look and just waved us pass. Never got through customs so quickly in my life

This has been the one disappointment. Demand curve perhaps a touch too steep and their current frame supplier perhaps unable to find more capacity.
