Well, i hope that your theory is correct. Booked flights, but no entry

Sure you will sell your flights easily. Just hold on man. I am pretty sure they will have more entries available. Have you phoned them directly? Someone said there is something wrong with their website.

I agree completely. If there is a no substitution policy what is the point of a waiting list?

Only reason I can think of is that they are thinking of 'adding' some more entries...If the 'waiting list' reaches lets say 500 they say hey, more entries available at the bargain price of R5k!!!

I have a mate that got seriously injured a week before 70.3, he struggled to get a refund out the full.

Here is the low down ..... he said there were only a handful last night when he left so it is now sold out and my friend said very unlikely they will increase the numbers as they have never had a sold out race and had to deal with those type of numbers. As such they wont risk it by over subscribing and biting off more than they can handle.

There is a refund policy - on a sliding scale and those entries will go to the waiting list.

I broke my ribs just before and didnt get a refund.

You need to also consider the organiser - there is no time after a certain point to print new numbers/names ect. There are partial refunds until a certain point - imagine the logistical nightmare if people knew they could sub a week before the event

IRONMAN South Africa

For the first time ever IRONMAN South Africa is SOLD OUT! The waiting list is now active. Please note that unpaid entries have 48 hours to make payment before those slots are rolled down to athletes on the waiting list. Full house for the 10-Year Anniversary edition!

Good news

Is this new? 5150/70.3/IM has had zero policy as far as I know.

How does it work just for interest sake?

Lets assume I get injured in the first week February. Of the R4,300 how much will I get back then?

As for the numbers printing they can do it at any stage. They had to reprint my number this year and did it right there at registration. Took them 2 minutes to print a new sticker thingy with all those numbers on. Also at check in they also could do it as certain guys "modified" there numbers. They even went as far as to write custom numbers on stickers and stickem on the bikes (helping out some nervous athletes).

Maybe they should consider a 2 wave start. Men and then woman.....

My 2c: I think everyone complaining about the substitution/refund policy has to remember that the Ironman guys are running a business, i.e. they're not doing this for charity.

Completing and training for an Ironman is not a small undertaking and I think if their policy was not as strict, they'd be running their business at a loss.

I realise that there are exceptional circumstances, but I'm guessing that in 95% of "exceptional circumstances", it's just someone who didn't put in the hours and wants his/her money back.

Also, they've managed to build their brand up into an aspirational status symbol so they can pretty much charge whatever they want and set whatever refund policy they want. In this case, it's pretty obvious they can do whatever they want and still sell out the event.

I think they're very upfront and honest about their refund policy. In my opinion, if you don't like it, you don't have to enter.

from their website

  • Until 6 December 2013 – 50% refund on entry fee
  • From 7 December 2013 – 7 February 2014 – 25% refund on entry fee
  • 8 February 2014 and after – 0% refund on entry fee

I agree with Sluiper - I think many people just cop out.

Re the point of a wait list... there are also people who have entered in the last 2 days and not yet paid. If they don't pay in 48 hours those spots are opened up to guys on the waiting list...
