Course has never changed in EL and they are over 3000 now

The course did change in EL. Its now half a 3.8km swim lap and half a 180 km bike lap.

Saw a tweet from Alec Riddle suggesting that it might be Maitlands and 3 sisters?

Not sure if thats good or bad, as i have no idea what he is referring to.....but i am sure it is going to be interesting.

Give us some local info on a prospective route? Maitlands and 3 sisters sounds like hills ......

I'm sure the reasoning behind the change is to accommodate the size of the field. Stretch the field out on the swim and not having to pass the same backmarkers twice on the bike. Bring it on, Ironman's meant to be a challenge!

That would be crazy but the Europeans will like it.

I think its great news. Especially the swim part. The one small and one big loop that they had planned would NOT have worked. Although i also enjoyed the little run halfway through. But a single loop swim will spread the field out nicely. The bike and run can be left as is. I dont think an extra 300 atheletes will make much of a difference on the bike course as in the past we had enough space. Run course has to stay the same to enjoy the atmosphere that is ironman PE. Looking forward!.

They are hills....and not little ones.

More like the 3 Evil sisters or 3 bitches.

In total they about 2 km but they are 3 steep climbs right after each other.

They will definitely be a mood killer and will break many riders if they are done twice.

Could be the year with the most DNF

Looking at my old garmin stats :

Maitlands climb is 2.5km, avg gradient of around 4 to 5% - total elev gain of about 90m.

From bottom of Maitlands up towards and over 3 sisters is approx 8.5km with avg gradient of 5% and total elev gain of 270m or so - the first sister does bump up to 10 % here and there.

It sounds reasonable. Will definitely change the mechanics of the race and maybe suit the bikers more...... Sorry runners
