Swiss, any tips on getting in long "rides" and swims in Europe this time of year? With no bike I should add... Is it worth taking MTB shoes to spin with (most hotel gyms don't have proper spin bikes IIRC).

I thought of trying to hire a bike to do a long ride or 2 on the weekend - but not sure feasible at this time of the year and then I would have to travel with serious winter kit plus helmet, shoes etc for MAYBE 1 or 2 rides...

Really *** timing - 3 weeks away slap bang when peak training should be happening. :(

Where will u be going?

Short and sweet safe = Stay Indoors

Our winter here on planet zug has been pretty mild and if you have reasonable winter riding gear you would manage ok, and in my area you would be able to rent a bike without to much problem. Some other parts of Europe might not be so lucky.

BUT....there's always a but

Its winter and the weather will be cold and can be unpredictable, I'd rather stick with a gym or spin studio near where you will be staying that will allow you to use the bikes, that way there is no risk and no need to carry all the winter gear. Most gyms I've seen some of the spinning bikes have mtb spd type pedals.

Bonus if you can find one that has a swimming pool as well. Here in switz you don't often get gym's that have a training pool, there are lots of public indoor 25 m pools.

Training outdoors in Europe you run the risk of illness

Does the cold really make you sick? You still need to catch a virus to get sick. Maybe an extended training period in the cold will lower your immune system and then the virus will pounce...........

But I don't think the cold as such makes you sick. Or am I wrong?

I think you are right, superficially, the cold itself doesn't make you sick, but exercising in cold (and in particular dry) temps can inflame the mucous membranes and make you more susceptible to illness

That about sums it up, currently I'm riding on the IDT and swimming indoors (duh!) but all my running is outdoors and yes the mucous she is flowing a lot more than normal...... lets just say I'm spoeging a lot more than normal.

A few years ago I rode on the weekends (daylight) right through winter including some 8 hr rides and never got sick, but ja the mucous generator worked overtime.

But the cold has to be treated with respect, a few weeks ago I swam indoors (indoor air temp +/- 30 degrees C) and then went for a run afterwards in about +1 Deg C air temp and it did not feel good. The next day I had a nasty head cold which lasted for a few days. Similar thing happened recently when I rode my IDT (hot and sweaty) and then did a short run straight afterwards

ok ok you know what I meant. I know 'cold' doesnt make you sick, but running in conditions 30 deg colder and being exposed to virus' your body hasnt built immunity for is a chance I wouldnt take.

Amsterdam as a base for 2 weeks with some forrays into Belgium and Germany, then a week on mud island... AKA the UK (well just London actually). Looks like my hotel in Amsterdam actually has a pool which is a bonus - although they advertise it as a "large" pool but by the pics it looks maybe 15m tops. Still I will take it!

I am just worried about the lack of long rides - 90 minutes on a spin bike is my threshold. The runs - I will layer up and do some sightseeing - like Dave says - get lost and I get to see new parts of the cities and get some extra miles in as a bonus...

But ja, my biggest worry is getting sick. been trying to get a flu jab before I go over but no one here has them yet... if I can make it to April 6 healthy I'll be a happy man - already reconciled that I will be doing my first full IM well-underdone as things have not been going to plan already since 70.3, so now I just want to do (and finish) the damn thing!

I think you right, but sick people make you sick - and there are lots of those in Europe at this time of the year (and on planes and trains and etc etc etc)

(I'll be the oke wiping his hands with disinfectant wipes every 3 minutes.)
