Anyone riding the Argus?

Yip, fantastic way to get a non stop 110 km ride in, with a extra 50 km's for riding to and from the race. looks windy which will also be good for a bit more quality riding

at my pace this is a 18 - 20 hour week... that's really big, what time are you aiming for?

I'm aiming for 12 - 14 hour weeks now in the final stretch, roughly 1.5 hours during weekdays and +-7 hour weekends

hoping for 11hrs, but will see... that run is going to determine everything, never done a marathon, did my first every 21 last year October, so the legs need to hold out..

firstly, WOW, you guys do so much training. I just don't know how you fit that into normal life! That is very impressive.

then on the course: has anyone done the bike route and could you offer some comments on the downhills? How steep and tight is it? Road surface? Would you coast or is it steady peddaling type stuff?

Quite refreshing, somebody worried about the downhills for a change :D

None of the downhills are majorly steep or tight. The first one after the long drag up to about the 15km mark can be quite fast and you may be able to get to coasting mode, unless the west is pumping like 2012 and you have to peddle down there in granny....

The second one after the Lakeside climb is not that fast or long and you should be able to peddle.

The next one after Cows corner has a couple of speedbumps on it so be vigilant here.

Next one down towards Maitlands has a tightish left turn where I would advise caution as the surface before the turn is a bit rough and you can carry some speed in here.

Down the other side of Maitlands is quite fast as well especially if the west blows but nothing to worry about.

Then you have a small downhill after turning towards Sardinia Bay which is also a left hander not to be taken to fast.

The downhill towards Schoenies is quite rough on the surface side but smooths out before you make the turn and also has a tightish left hander.

Hope I covered them all. I mostly coast on anything resembling a downhill to save my legs...

So in other words how much will we need to brake? I hate breaking in ironman.

I have a friend aiming for a KONA slot.

He plans to race 09h50 and is 40 - 45 age cat. Is he likely to get a slot with that time?

Are you still breaking claws or wot?

Brake?

A friend hmmmmm....?

Wot age group you in garf?

The new course obviously added quite a few turns (as in turn-offs) which will slow you down also. Only two corners really on the new section where brakes would be applied I reckon. The other ones are mainly on uphill sections in any case.

35 - 39

Yes a German friend :whistling:

We are 2 numbers apart...but I recon we will be about 2000 positions apart at the end, you are aiming for sub-12 I guess and me to finish...

Anyone riding the Argus?

Yip I'm doing it!

Gonna do about 140kms on the day in the saddle then muster up and do a 12/15km run afterwards. Will be a good day out I think.

Touch wood I stay away from any crashes

That is exactly why I don't ride the argus anymore if I am planning on doing ironman. seen too many guys getting taken out by others. just not worth the risk...but really good training though.
