Contrary to what most shops will have you believe - almost any chains works in SSing.

That said - the worst possible thing in SSing is when the chain slips and you either smash your whatnots on the crossbar or try and kiss your front wheel at high speed.

The "standard" in SSing is a track chain - they're pretty cheap and nice and strong. It's a normal chain from a track bike - most shops should have them.

This is my favourite chain (for your next CRC order) - oh and my favourite chainrings...

I reckon this combo is the gold standard in SSing - I've used Shimano DX, DMR, no name brand and a variety of random sprockets with no issues at all with this pairing.

Thank you for taking the time... how long would you say a chain ring lasts for?

It lasts plenty long....mine has done over 2500km and still going strong. I rotate mine every now and again, and I could swop it around to extend the life even more, but sometimes its just lekker to get something new

It will last for.....ever. I reckon longer than you will own the bike. I'm not sure about the science behind it but without the yaw angle chainring wear is (apparently) seriously reduced.

Properly lubed and cleaned of course.

The old shimano alivio cranks also use those bolts. Have about 5 in the toolbox now.

So the new ones come with rivets?

I have Alivio cranks I want to convert to SS but can't recall if they have bolts or rivets?
