I see a lot of topics on light weight wheels. At what weight is a wheel set classified as light? Does it include rim tape and valves?

Road?

29 er?

26 er?

mmmm good question, my light is your heavy ol chestnut.

My idea of light for a 29er wheelset....Anything under 1600g for a set but then these wheels might not be the right tool for the job. I like fit and forget wheels that don't break the bank completely but they don't come in under that weight, happy to pay the price of a few extra grams ito maintenance and strength.

26 Inch...I honestly can't remember anymore(Did I just say that)

Rouxtjie, I have the same idea about wheels. I want to put them on and forget them. I am just interested in what people consider light weight.

It depends on your personal weight.

A 65 kg whippet, will be fine on a 1350g wheel set.

However, once the rider weight gets to 85 Kg, a 1600g wheelset is light.

At a 100kg, 1850g is a light wheelset to carry the loads normal XC and marathon.

Generally the AM classic Race wheels are very light and extremely good value.....

AM Classic Race 26" are 1320g

In my opinion:

Road: sub 1400g

29er: sub 1600g

Thanks, would you include rim tape, skewers, valves etc in this weight. Mavic rims for example don't need rim tape.

No, manufacturers will not add skewers or tape or anything to the wheelset when weighing them. They try and keep it as light as possible.

I personally see light wheels as:

Road: Sub 1100g

29er: Sub 1400g

26er: They still make these?

Road:

< 1500g - light (alu wheels which most of us have)

< 1300g - extra light (light racing wheels, possibly carbon, which most of us want)

± 1000g - super light (specialist wheels which most of us can only admire LOL)

wheelset weight should include rim tape (and valves if tubeless), not skewers.

degreasing bearings is optional :)
