HAHAHA Garfield if only all problems could be resolved like that! it is sad that we have to share the same date but without going into too much detail its through no fault of Spectrumsport or B-Active Sports, we all just hope that there is enough triathletes to go around to make both races huge successes

Was thinking of doing my first Triathlon in 10 or so years but at that prize I will not .

Do not know why it is so expensive, MTB nogal so no Traffic cops needed, I guess there is some costs to keep people save in water but I will stick to cycling then.

Break it down and it is not that bad. 8 hours of racing ........................... And also its not the race, it is the journey.

R4,000 for Ironman sounds a lot... but divide it into the 400 hours you train to get to the start line...

I think R1,300 is reasonable, a lot of organisation must go into these things and if they don't get enough people entering they would make a loss.

I'm going to give this event a go.MTB is my thing and I like doing Trail running aswell.Competed in both events. Swimming is where the problem lies. Most I ever swam was 400m in the Xterra lite and that was a tough swim for me.Just wandering how hard is it to Canoe 16Km.Maybe a better option?

I started doing canoe tri's in the 1980's, so have been there...

Have you ever canoed before? If not I'd stick to the swim.

Canoeing takes time to learn and is a schleep if you dont have a boat yet, think of buying roof racks, boat / paddle / splash cover, find a place to train and the time it takes to travel to the dam where you train, plus it takes more time to aqquire decent balance so you dont fall out when paddling with a lot of other boats i.e. the start of the canoe can be quite rough.

Rather persevere with the swimming, its the discipline which is recognized in 98.9% of all triathlons and once you get the hang of it you can do swim tri's all over the world.

Swim vs Canoe:

I can talk with authority on both, since I have a serious balance problem in the canoe and am unable to swim!

A solution is to buy or borrow a stable canoe. Of course it is slower, but at novice speeds the difference between a wide and narrow canoe is very little. Better still is to buy or borrow a surf ski. since this is a "sit on top" type of totally enclosed canoe, you can simply jump back on after falling off!!

Seriously: as an experienced "tried to paddle" and "tried to swim" failure in both, I think it is far far far easier to learn from scratch to paddle reasonably than it is to learn to swim reasonably.
