Toolsets in general works out cheaper than buying tool for tool. But good quality toolsets are insanely expensive!! So I made a list of tools that I use/need often and bought high quality (parktool) and then the cheapest I could find for those that I use once a lifetime.

* Allen keys I bought a parktool set as well as a MIDAS special, always end up loosing my 5mm so when ever I travel the cheapies go with.

If you only want to work on your bike, buy bike specific tools (sizes) I would go to my LBS and ask them to give you a list of types and sizes. They can also order the tools not available from normal shops.

What I don't like about tool sets is they never have all the tools, and they come in these moulded plastic cases, which means only those tools fit in there.

Over the last 7 years of doing my own work on my bikes I have bought all the tools I require, and I use canvas tool rolls to store my tools. The tool rolls have eyelets, so you can hang the entire tool roll on a peg board. When I store my tools, I roll the tool rolls up, and put them in an ammo box along with grease, sealant, anti seize, fork oil and spares. This also ensures rattle free travelling when I take my tools along on a mtb/camping trip.
