I reckon it should be based on what u ride. Enve all good and well but if u are riding multi day stuff consider the stiffness will wear u down. Carbon wheels are super stiff and while that sounds appealing its not all good for bouncing around mountains.....

I would look at DT Swiss Tricon, Mavic SLR's or Easton havens.

Thanks, the bike is really plush, so I suspect that stiff wheels is absolutely the way to go. Hence I am looking at carbon rims.

Roval SL (not trail version) is R16,5k. Same weight as Enve and the reviews looks good. Good back up in SA, limited lifetime warranty (don't know what that means). The Trail version is not available aftermarket in SA.

Anybody riding them? They come standard on high end Epic's.

Quite a few people here that have them. They all seem happy. Although I don't quite get why you'd want to ride XC wheels on a trail/AM bike.

Increasingly I'm building wheels with silver spokes, one of my customers said he preferred that as black spokes with black rims "look like a hole".

I also prefer black spoke look - but they only look good for a couple of months - then they look like s..t - silver does not show the small nicks they get that look so bad cosmetically.

I have 2 MTB wheel sets with black spokes - never again - although they do look good initially - especially when you take the stickers off the rims....

I saw some Enve rims hanging @Olympic Cycles in the week I am sure they could build you a pair

Thanks I will definitely check them out.

ZTR on Circus Monkey hubs with Revolution spokes. You can buy 3 pairs for that price, all different colours. They will be lighter and the 3 pairs will outlast the Rovals.

American Classic Race or Standard wheelsets. AC Race weighs in @1420g and is strong, pretty, super quality, and won`t bankrupt you.

I am looking at these. How durable are they? I have heard that the rims are pretty soft and ding easily.

They feel/are stiffer than my Crest wheelset, I can not feel any flex in them, but I am a lightweight. Their weight limit is 95kgs. Not sure about dinging I have not encountered the problem. I like them a crap load.

Good question. Some superlight Enve or Spaz wheels mentioned are XC/marathon type wheels, and would go well on a HT, Scalpel or Epic.

How about some Chris King hubs in a flash colour, strong spokes and AM ZTRs?

The bike is a AM/XC bike. The amount of real AM riding that I will do is probably about 10%, for that I have a set of wheels. I do mostly marathon or stage riding. The reason I went from a Tallboy to a Tallboy LTc is for the more relaxed geometry and the little AM riding that I do. The bike is definitely a lot more relaxed and comfortable.

The Enve rims differ for the AM and XC version. The AM is slightly wider. On the Spez Roval the rim is the same with a slight change between the hub and spokes between the XC and trail version.

I had a set of Enve XC wheels on Chris Kings in my hands this morning, I nearly had a bit of an accident. Wow I am sold! Now to get a buyer for my old Tallboy or a kidney, heart or liver.

King hubs on Enve rims sounds great. I have my doubts about carbon rims and rocky bumps, but I have not heard of any failures.

They do seem to have much confidence in their product. It carries a lifetime crash warranty. Original owner will pay 50% of new price in case of crash damage.
